(CNN)The day after accusing Ted Cruz of winning the Iowa caucuses unfairly and asking for a rematch in the state, Donald Trump says he's now over it.

"I'm so much into this, into New Hampshire, that I just — I don't care about that anymore," Trump said

Eh, maybe you should have watched it. Cruz himself says of the Cruz campaign messages about Carson:

"It is in fact something that the voters found relevant."

So much for the "no effect" theory.

(I even thought the effect was likely modest. Until now.)

If Carson follows through on doing something about this, I have a feeling there will be a lot of Caucus goers who did change their vote to Cruz because of the lies being told that Carson was dropping out.

I think it’s going to be bigger number than expected. If they changed their vote to Cruz, then Cruz was their second choice and they would not be expecting a dirty trick.

I’ve heard Rubio was doing the same thing, but I haven’t seen any proof about his campaign. Anyone see proof that Rubio’s campaign did it too?

The Cruz people were quite justified to use published news

No they weren't. Breaking news should be verified by at least two reliable sources. If possible, anyone using it should go directly to the most knowledgeable. They DEFINITELY should've verified with Dr. Carson's campaign. A smart lawyer with an experienced and well-managed campaign staff knows that.

When is the last time a short man with very big ears won US President?

There are statistics that will prove you wrong...

I am hoping the controversy means the GOP won’t allow the Dems to cheat this election without some serious hurting.

I’ve heard Rubio was doing the same thing, but I haven’t seen any proof about his campaign. Anyone see proof that Rubio’s campaign did it too?

I've not seen "hard proof" such as an e-mail sent by top Rubio staff. But some kid named Conrad Close, working for Rubio, Tweeted "Rubio campaign pushing hard the narrative that Carson is dropping out. Obviously looking to pick up votes from Carson."

This was later deleted, but can be Googled, Binged, etc.

Now Close is saying this was not official from Rubio's campaign, just something he saw on Twitter. But, I dunno - usually what a person says when they have no hint of themselves being in hot water is closest to the truth. Rubio's people might also have been smart enough to not leave an obvious Tweet trail from the top, but that's conjecture on my part.

Previously, multiple hardcore Cruzers were arguing "Rubio did it too", but it may be they had no hard proof either. So I guess I've backed down to "strong suspicion."

Carson is the root cause of the whole mess and he’s trying to fling it at Cruz.

Cruz apologized for what his staffers did, it was an honest mistake and not something done underhandedly.

Breaking news should be verified by at least two reliable sources.

I think that you are well within your rights to criticize the Cruz campaign as an expression of free speech even if your criticisms are wacky and off base, as they most often are. As far as the Cruz campaign is concerned they have the same right of free speech as you have and unless they lie, it's fair, especially if they have a good faith basis for the speech, which they did.

As far as verification of news, that's the journalist's job. Your ire ought to be directed at CNN. I know why it's not, though: it doesn't suit your anti-Cruz political agenda.

It's no more complicated than that.

Cruz’s apology reminded me of Bluto’s apology to the hippy after he smashed his guitar.

The campaign had an absolute obligation to verify the story with the Carson campaign. It's called ethics.

Aren't you at all bothered that the Cruz campaign is using the same kind of nasty maneuvers that the back-stabling elite used to get a victory for Cochran in the primary run-off? Back then Cruz was a principled Constitutional Conservative who wanted fairly fought campaigns.

It's disturbing.

I wish that standard was applied on FR.

it's disturbing.

After 50 years of election watching and sometimes more than watching, this is the feeblest excuse for endless juvenile carping and whining I have ever seen. Ben Carson himself or more precisely, his staff set this in motion. Carson should own it and move on.

Yes, it’s politics as usual.

It’s OK to cheat as long as the outcome isn’t changed. It’s OK to cheat if the target is a weak candidate who can’t possibly win anyway. It’s OK to cheat if you have plausible deniability in your pocket and a smooth-talking oleaginous candidate on the podium.

How dare anyone think that anyone but an experienced, deeply-connected professional politician should be able to run for high office.

Only a professional politician would know the Right Things to do and say at any point in a campaign. And if an interloper should stumble, well heck, that’s his fault and he rightfully becomes “fair game” for the predators.

Politics as usual. /sigh

There was NO cheating. It does not matter how many times you allege it, it doesn’t make it so. You need to reconnect with reality.

Since Ted Cruz is willing to own his campaign's dirty tricks and stretching what's okay in a campaign, many voters will move on to a candidate who supports a different kind of campaign.

It seems to be happening with the dems, too.

If ANYONE stumbles, they will be attacked. Don't make this out to be a contest between jackals and a little lamb. That's dishonest. This is hard ball politics; it's the nature of the contest.

Trump stumbles, he's attacked. Bush stumbles, he's attacked. Cruz stumbles, he's attacked. Even if Ben Carson stumble, advantage WILL be taken. That's how it is. Get used to it. It has nothing to do with tender mercies, experience or inexperience. This is being played for the ages, there is no forgiveness.
