Army, Marine chiefs: Require women to register for draft
By Rebecca Kheel - 02/02/16 02:02 PM EST
Women should be required to register for the draft if all combat jobs are going to be open to them, the top generals of the Marines and Army said Tuesday.
âEvery American whoâs physically qualified should register for the draft,â Gen. Robert Neller, commandant of the Marine Corps, told the Senate Armed Services Committee.
Army Chief of Staff Gen. Mark Milley agreed with Neller. âI think that all eligible and qualified men and women should register for the draft,â he said.
The two made the remarks while testifying before the panel with Navy Secretary Ray Mabus and Under Secretary of the Army Patrick Murphy on how to implement the landmark decision to open all combat jobs to women.
Murphy and Mabus were more hesitant on the issue, only saying there should be a debate about it.
âIt should be a national debate, and I encourage the legislative body to look at that,â Murphy said.
But Sen. Claire McCaskill (D-Mo.) concurred with the generals.
âPart of me believes that asking women to register as we ask men to register would maybe, possibly open up more recruits as women began to think about, âWell, the military is an option for me,â â she said. âI think itâs the right thing going forward.â
Late last year, Defense Secretary Ashton Carter announced all military jobs would be open to both sexes with no exceptions, despite a request from the Marines to keep some closed. Carterâs decision raised the question of whether women would be required to register for the draft.
The Pentagon previously sidestepped the issue when asked about it, citing ongoing litigation.
The Selective Service System, as the draft is officially called, has been sued by the National Coalition for Men, which says itâs unfair to men, and a New Jersey teenager who says itâs discriminatory that she isnât allowed to register.
Both lawsuits are working their way through the court system.
In 1981, the Supreme Court ruled women didnât have to register because combat jobs were closed to them. Currently, most men in the U.S. between the ages of 18 and 25 are required to register with the government and report to serve in the armed services if called. The last draft occurred during the Vietnam War.
At the hearing, Neller promised to carry out Carterâs order despite the Marinesâ earlier opposition to it.
âThe secretary of Defense has made his decision that we are not granting an exemption,â he said in response to Sen. Jack Reed (D-R.I.). âI want every Marine to succeed, senator, so that is our goal.â
The Marinesâ request exposed a rift between it and Mabus, who also oversees the Marines. Mabus had dismissed a study the service used to justify its request as flawed and biased.
âAs I thoroughly examined the Marine Corps study, it was clear that the conclusions focused on the average performance of female Marines rather than on individual abilities,â he said Tuesday.
Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.), chairman of the committee, slammed Mabus for his criticism of the study.
âSo you, with a straight face, make claims that the Marinesâ study was flawed and biased, even if you did not even go see the study being performed,â McCain said after Mabus said he didnât observe the study firsthand.
McCain also directed ire toward the Pentagon more broadly.
âPut simply, I am concerned that the department has gone about things backwards,â he said. âThis consequential decision was made and mandated before the military services could study its implications and before any implementation plans were devised to address the serious challenges raised in the studies.â
The military leaders testifying also sought to assuage concerns of those who believe opening all combat jobs to women will result in lower standards.
âYou cannot lower standards,â Mabus said. âThis is not about quotas. Itâs not about equality of outcome. Itâs about equality of opportunity. And youâve got to keep those standards. Youâve got to keep them job-related. Youâve got to keep them very rigorous, and youâve got to evolve those standards as our threats and as our challenges evolve. But theyâve got to evolve for everybody.â
Sen. Tim Kaine (D-Va.) speculated that Carterâs decision will mean future generations of women will be more equipped to meet standards without them being lowered.
âDaughters raised today are going to be raised different than daughters 30 years ago,â he said. âWhen thereâs a social cap or ceiling or limitation, that sort of gets absorbed by people and they donât even focus on what they might be able to do.
âThey get raised in a particular way, with the thought that that cap is going to be there. When the cap is lifted, all of a sudden thereâs all kinds of possibilities and people start to focus on opportunities they might have and train themselves up for them.â

That means they cant have government college loans, job training or jobs if they don’t...
I didnt realize upper body strength and menstrual period were dependent on how one was raised. /s
Ding Ding Ding— Thank you General— we have a winner. LET’s ask Hillary about women registering for the draft as required of ALL US males of certain age range. This is not supportable under Equal Treatment under our Constitution IF women are NOT required to register or to be drafted should there coma a need.
Good one—General. And dead on target.
The commandant is a coward. He would expect his Marines to advance straight into any danger, even at likely death resulting.
Yet, he cannot find the balls to tell a congressional committee that drafting teenage girls is immoral, evil, and a good way to destroy USMC combat arms.
Grunts must risk their life, he wont risk a job. Coward.
And if he truly believes that, id like to see hi explain to General Cates, Vandegrift, Chesty Puller, and all the rest why last years cheerleaders could have had a place at Chosin, Iwo, Guadalcanal, Hue, Pusan. He is either an idiot or a coward.
Glad you find it funny. Nothing funny about it. That’s basically beating up good normal Christian traditional women who are trying to live life and want families. THEY never asked for this.
The feminazi officer corps wants it, and every nice normal non lesbian American girl is getting the shaft instead of the ones who have pushed this.
I will help my daughter evade and will encourage her not to sign up. I will help as many of her friends as possible resist.
About time, give them full equality.

This is another major milestone on the way to the homogenized statist regime that treats all as alike as numbers or counters. I have expressed myself before on the belief that there should be no females in the armed forces except nurses. People here get bent out of shape over that one. Women in uniform is just another step to coercing women into uniform. The day will come when the US is in a protracted high intensity combat war and then women will be considered just more integers from the ‘personnel pool’.
For those who think women in uniform is a great idea answer whether you really want your daughter/niece/sister to be considered a ‘personnel integer’ who driving a truck or worse being in a combat arms unit is considered of greater importance than being a mother and wife.
This is the brave new world fondly desired by feminazis and their allies in the military who see women ,as one butch lieutenant said to me, just guys with an extra hole.
No draft, no equality.
As a school teacher once said to me Equality? What king of equality? Slaves are all equal, equally enslaved. That’s what breaking down all differences between individuals means. The equality of state slavery.
Of all the comments that I have seen on this topic, yours is the most uninformed by far. The liberal politicians want to both have their cake and eat it. They want to kiss the rears of the feminazis by forcing the Army and Marine Corps to accept females into the infantry and other real warfighters, while still keeping their voters in their camp.
The public will never stand for drafting women, especially if they can be forced into the ground gaining combat arms. The public understand that this would be crazy. Only the feminists (who would NEVER volunteer to serve) think that this is a good idea.
The Commandant of the Marine Corps and the Chief of Staff have forced the hand of these slimy politicians and you want to attack them. I hope that there is a special prize for you and the others who agree with you.
“Yet, he cannot find the balls to tell a congressional committee that drafting teenage girls is immoral, evil, and a good way to destroy USMC combat arms.”
My suspicion is that calling for women to be drafted is a means of popping this boil. Let’s see who wants to vote for having their daughters on the mud lines.
lets continue to make a mockery of our God- given gender traits...
its making a mockery of God,period.
Got to be PC you know
If they want to be guys, give them all the “privileges” of the guys. The entire idea of wymyn in combat roles is a stupid idea anyhow. We might as well go all the way on that road to hell.
They will brush this aside and if the courts choose to find on the issue, well then that's not their doing.
What contemptible turds.
