Thousands of [Greek] firms flee to Bulgaria

According to the president of the Hellenic Confederation of Professionals, Craftsmen and Merchants (GSEVEE), some 6,000 Greek enterprises have emigrated to Bulgaria in the last couple of years alone. At the same time, the GSEVEE chief says, Greeks are behind about 60,000 new tax registrations and bank accounts in the neighboring country.

Giorgos Kavathas on Tuesday cited the above figures from an ongoing survey by GSEVEE, adding that the interventions planned for the social security system can only be expected to lead to more Greek firms emigrating. The survey will be presented in the next few days, he noted.

He was speaking at a press conference held jointly by GSEVEE and the Hellenic Confederation of Commerce and Enterprises (ESEE) regarding their participation in tomorrow’s general strike against the government’s planned pension reforms. The two unions warned that manufacturers and merchants will not stop at this strike, and will escalate their industrial action further.

“The social security matter is a major national issue and we agree there has to be a reform, although no actuarial study would lead to safe conclusions given the existence of 1.5 million jobless,” argued the president of ESEE, Vassilis Korkidis.

Good idea. Bulgaria is serious about growing its economy and integrating with Europe, trading with the US. Besides, I recently discovered Bulgarian food has a lot in common with Greek food. :-))

You can’t have “a couple of years alone”. If they were alone they wouldn’t be a couple.

All the Eastern bloc countries who are still trying to shake off their communist hangovers have no intention of being duped or giving up their hard earned small steps at getting ahead. They rightly won’t allow their own people to be overrun or give over their wealth to parasites or foreign invaders.

Witness the death throes of the Socialist Welfare State. When the state can no longer tax the s__t out of its population and there are on suckers left to borrow from, and the population riots at the mere hint of cutting benefits, the productive finally wise up and leave. Having a Welfare State is worse than having a toxic dump in your country.

Bulgarians had a brutal Soviet occupation which, thanks to JP II, Reagan and Thatcher, came to an end in 1991. Today every Bulgarian feels the need to do one thing: get a house. Home ownership is very high in Bulgaria. Renting is discouraged. The leaders of Bulgaria are more capitalist that our leaders in America. Sad and humbling.
