Spurred by renewed fears of the fabled âBig Oneâ shattering the West Coast, the Obama administration on Tuesday promoted stronger earthquake-preparedness efforts as part of a first-of-its-kind White House summit.
Private foundation grants will fund new research at universities in California and Washington state, the Forest Service will streamline the placement of seismic monitoring stations and a presidential order will tighten standards for new federal buildings.

I’m against big earthquakes myself.
Sounds like another money grab with all the people benefiting from this latest scare.
This is actually a real problem and thousands could die in the next big urban area quake. Many, many buildings need to be retrofitted to make them safe.

Once again, I think someone like Trump knows how to build skyscrapers that will withstand an earthquake.
The area within several hundred miles of St. Louis should be building to earthquake standards. I just finished reading an article on potential time lines for quakes of various sizes. Have to go out until tonight but will post some estimates when I get back late.
Another New Madrid quake would cause far more loss of life than anything striking the West Coast.
