MASON CITY, IOWA, Feb. 3. - Three rock 'n' roll singing stars, who records and appearances stirred millions of teenagers, were killed early today in an Iowa field.
The four-place plane carrying the three and their pilot crashed soon after taking off in light snow and heavy gusts of wind from the Mason City Airport.
Dead were Buddy Holly, 22, of Lubbock, Tex.; Ritchie Valens, 17, of Los Angeles; J.P. (Big Bopper) Richardson, 24, of Beaumont, Tex., and Roger Peterson, 21, of Clear Lake, Iowa, the pilot.

Buddy Holly and Jim Croce ( for me ) are two of those singers/songwriters who really makes me wonder how much more great music would have been written had they lived longer ...
Many of the later great performers have acknowledged Buddy Holly’s influence on their music. The Beatles, the Rolling Stones, Eric Clapton, and Elton John come to mind.
It has been said that the Beatles took their name as inspiration from Buddy Holly and the Crickets. In other words, the Beatles chose their band name partly in homage to Buddy Holly’s own band.

I’ve just now begun discovering Buddy Holly’s rich musical legacy.
He recorded some superb and innovative tunes before he died.
I regard him as, behind Elvis, the most important figure in the formation of rock n roll.

My mom stayed upset about that event for years. She would cry when “The Day the Music Died” came on the radio.
But she always cried over “Seasons in the Sun” also.
Ritchie Valens was only 17 when he died? Sad.
“The Buddy Holly Story” starring pre-crash Gary Busey - a really well-done movie - and Gary Busey does his own very-well-done stuff on stage. Worth seeing.

Some of the plane crash pictures on the net are pretty rough.
They never knew what hit them.

No, my only trip to Texas was to San Antonio for a military reunion. Gotta’ say I was disappointed with the Alamo.
I met Jim Croce once quite by chance - in a shoe store no less.
