There's a tool called P2V (Physical To Virtual) which allegedly can be used to image a physical Windows or Linux system, and save that image as a virtual machine image. The last time I attempted such a thing, VMWare's website said the tool only supported Windows, and the Windows support was not working. Maybe they have fixed it since then.
