Horowitz: Hawkeye Humiliation: Cruz Crushes Cartel

“Vote for anyone but Cruz,” declared the much-vaunted Iowa establishment governor, Terry Branstad. Between Trump, the establishment, and Fox News, they threw everything they had at him in the months preceding the 2016 Iowa Caucus.

We heard it all: birtherism, ethanol, Goldman Sachs loans, the Palin endorsement, Cruz supposedly losing every debate, the Santorum/Huckabee sniping, the entire establishment ganging up to defeat him. Then we were told that even if Cruz wins Iowa, a victory would only occur in the event of low turnout. After all, the newbies will all be for Trump. Well, Cruz won with a record turnout, projected to be near 180,000. It also appears that Cruz will break Mike Huckabee’s previous record of the most total votes received by the caucus winner. And he did it in an elevn-person race.

Really puts into good perspective what a great historic victory Ted Cruz achieved for anti GOPe Conservatives.

This is a great day for Cruz and for conservatism. Four years ago, Cruz was just a private citizen running against the establishment in Texas. Now he’s a Senator, and a record-breaker in a presidential run.

I don’t see how he can beat hilary in a general...but I’m not sure that even matters. He’s done as much as one man can do.

Yes. Doubly strange, since only yesterday the report right here on FR was that the Koch Bros. are sharpening up the long knives for Trump.

To the top 5 finishers yesterday, Congratulations! Iowa liked all of you, more than those who finished behind you. As a matter of fact, I like all of you and any of you, more than the rest. My only disappointment is that Huckabee is the only one who dropped out. If Christie and Bush had also bowed out, it would have been a perfect night.

The only caveat that I see is Cruz still has to show he can attract crossover Democrats and Independents.

Had all the evangelicals in IA voted for him, his victory would have more decisive.

The conundrum of expanding the general electorate is still is an issue.

Demographically, America is neither IA nor TX writ large.

It’s best if Christie, Bush and Kasich stay in to suck establishment RINO votes away from Marco “Speedy Gonzalez” Rubio.

Why don’t you see it? He beats Hillary in the RealClearPolitics average. Getting tired of seeing people say Cruz can’t win the general. They’re buying into the classic GOPe RINO meme that only moderates can win in the general which has been proven wrong OVER AND OVER. And they’re ignoring all available polling data.

As for the record, Cruz got 51,000 votes. Previously, Santorum won with 29,000 and Huckabee won with 40,000. Not sure what the breakdown was, but I find it hard to believe he did worse with evangelicals than Huck or Santo with those numbers. The entrance polls also called the election wrong, so they could’ve got all those other stats wrong too.

If the polls really meant that much as a predictor of the future, Trump would've won last night. But he didn't.

Projecting a probable Cruz victory vs. Hillary this far ahead in time in even more silly.

Only a third of Americans are conservative and a quarter are evangelicals.

IA which is 98% white is not really representative of America and neither is NH.

Cruz has his work cut out for him and NH isn’t exactly what any one would call Cruz country.

His victory is fantastic, historic and impressive.

Personally I just fear the Clintons are unstoppable. Just look at how they stole victory from Sanders. The corruption is pretty much well...complete, and they have tens of thousands of toadies around the country eager to assist.

And...this is definitely an instance when I am eager to be utterly wrong. Cruz’s whole campaign is based on the assumption/premise/hope that there really are hundreds of thousands of (more or less) conservatives who are largely side-lined and who will come out for him. I will begin praying that that is truly the case.

"I don’t see how he can beat hilary (sic)in a general."

CD, are you kidding me? Have you seen this guy debate? Have you seen how they can barely stand that tired, old, drug and booze addled hag up?

If Hillary makes it to the convention, and I don't think she will because of health, legal, and popularity issues in that order, she will have a heck of a time getting nominated. I don't think she is the one.

He would kill Biden. Gore? Brown?

God may have delivered the USA, again.

Don't think debate performance is going to matter much. Even Romney managed to stomp Obama in the debates, and look how well that election panned out.

I’d happily vote for Cruz without reservations. He is a lifelong conservative.

Which why he has made enemies inside his party and the Left hates him.
