Adele Tells Trump He Can't Use Her Songs on Campaign Trail

Trump doesn't have legal permission to use "Rolling in the Deep" and "Skyfall" at rallies, artist says.

Donald Trump "could've had it all," but now he'll have nothing, as Adele has denied him permission to use any of her music on the campaign trail.

The real estate magnate has used "Rolling in the Deep" and "Skyfall" at various events to rev up the crowd. That will soon come to an end, a rep for the famous singer told E! News

"Adele has not given permission for her music to be used for any political campaigning," the rep said.

An Adele fan, Trump attended her Radio City Music Hall concert at the end of 2015.

rump isn't the first politician to appropriate the British singer's music for campaign use. Mike Huckabee also shared a cover of Adele's "Hello" on Twitter and YouTube, but the audio since has been muted as a result of a claim from the copyright holder. This also isn't this first time a musician has banned his or her music from political events. According to court documents obtained by E! News, Steven Tyler never granted Trump permission to feature Aerosmith's singles at rallies and other gatherings. As a result, he requested the presidential hopeful to stop playing the songs.

"Trump for President does not have our client's permission to use 'Dream On' or any of our client's other music in connection with the campaign because it gives the false impression that [Tyler] is connected with or endorses Mr. Trump's presidential bid," the cease and desist letter stated.

Days after legal papers were sent to the GOP frontrunner, the businessman spoke out on Twitter. "Even though I have the legal right to use Steven Tyler's song, he asked me not to," he shared online. "Have better one to take its place!"

Neil Young also voiced his concern after Trump used the song "Rockin' in the Free World" during his presidential candidacy announcement.

"Donald Trump was not authorized to use 'Rockin' in the Free World' in his presidential candidacy announcement. Neil Young, a Canadian citizen, is a supporter of Bernie Sanders for President of the United States of America," the 69-year-old musician's rep told E! News in a statement.

A spokesperson for Trump later clarified that the Republican hopeful paid for and obtained the legal right to use the song but wouldn't be using it again

There are stories like this in every election cycle.

The truth is, as long as Trump pays the licensing fee, there is not a damn thing Adele can do about Trump using her music at his rallies.

Sure, she can look like a sore loser by complaining, but her complaints have no force of law. She just looks like a whiner.

Rush Limbaugh has been opening his show to the guitar riff from the Pretenders “My City Was Gone” for the past 26 years. There is not a damn thing they can do about it.

I am not 100% sure but I think there may be a difference between using a short instrumental clip of a song as "bumper music" and using a song in its entirety.

FWIW:

The opening bass riff from this song "was something that Tony Butler used to play just as a warm-up," said Steve Churchyard, the engineer for the record.[3] It has been used as the opening theme 'bumper' for Rush Limbaugh's popular American talk radio program since 1984, during his days at KFBK in Sacramento, California. He didn't use the lyrics, but Limbaugh said in 2011 that he chose it because of the irony of a conservative using such an anti-conservative song, though he mainly liked its "unmistakable, totally recognizable bass line."[4] In 1999, Rolling Stone magazine reported that, according to Hynde's manager, Limbaugh had neither licensed the song nor asked permission to use it. According to Rolling Stone, EMI took action after Limbaugh told a pair of reporters in 1997 that "it was icing on the cake that it was [written by] an environmentalist, animal rights wacko and was an anti-conservative song. It is anti-development, anti-capitalist and here I am going to take a liberal song and make fun of [liberals] at the same time."[5] EMI issued a cease and desist request that Limbaugh stop using the song, which he did. When Hynde found out during a radio interview, she said that her parents loved and listened to Limbaugh and she did not mind its use. A usage payment was agreed upon which she donated to PETA.[4][5] She later wrote to the organization saying, "In light of Rush Limbaugh's vocal support of PETA's campaign against the Environmental Protection Agency's foolish plan to test some 3,000 chemicals on animals, I have decided to allow him to keep my song, 'My City Was Gone', as his signature tune..."[5]

I wouldn't blame Adele one bit for suing Huckabee for this.

What the heck was the Huckabee campaign thinking? It looks more like something SNL would use as a parody to make fun of him.
