In rugby, you do not use your head to tackle.

“You do not use your head to tackle”
My father, who played football in the late 30’s, said that to me when I played in the late 60’s early 70’s. In his time it was leather helmets and no face mask.

We were taught to tackle head-on with the shoulder. We were also taught to fire out into the runner at the instant of contact to minimize our chances of being hurt. Tackling from the side we were to try to get our head in front of him and continue driving our shoulder through him to minimize his gain.

I've often wondered if all the "protective" gear in American football might actually make the sport MORE dangerous, not less. Helmets and such allow the players to use their bodies as weapons. What player would intentionally spear another player in the head if it were noggin to noggin instead of helmet to helmet? Today's helmets weigh several pounds, and - by making the head area unnaturally heavy - they create a lot of torque in the neck.
