A cult exercises complete control of its members, thus removing free will and responsibility - both essential parts of being a citizen instead of a subject or cult member.
Islam, for example, defines how one cleans oneself after defecation. Islam commands one wipe ones self with three, five, or seven smooth round stones, but Never, Ever, use two, four or six smooth round stones.
