Iran, Airbus sign deal for 118 planes worth $27 billion

PARIS: Iran agreed on Thursday to buy 118 Airbus jets worth $27 billion at list prices, including a dozen A380 superjumbos, after international sanctions were lifted against Tehran this month.

The planemaker said the deal, signed amid a raft of others during a visit by President Hassan Rouhani, was conditional on getting US export licences because more than 10 per cent of Airbus jetliner parts come from the United States.

The order for 73 wide-body and 45 narrow-body jets allows Airbus to steal a march on US rival Boeing as Iran seeks to renovate and expand its worn-out fleet of 225 planes.

The inclusion of A380s — the world's largest jetliner — sends a commercial signal to established carriers in the Gulf, and is a boost for Airbus, which has been struggling to sell them. However, they will not be delivered before end-decade as Iran expands its airports and focuses on urgent needs.

Boeing has so far held back from Iran amid what industry sources and diplomats describe as political and legal concerns, but Iranian officials are urging it to mimic its European rival.

The Airbus deal depends on unravelling a knot of financial issues including whether and how Iran can avoid using the US financial system for the jets, usually priced in dollars.

Deputy transport minister Asghar Fakhrieh Kashan told Reuters the deal would be financed using a mixture of European export credits — which guarantee loans by commercial banks — and lease financing.

“Courtesy of the American taxpayers..”

As I understand it, we are simply unfreezing Iranian assets and bank accounts. We are not giving them our tax dollars. We’re giving them back their money.

Well, yeah. There is NOTHING to keep a suicide crew from deciding to take over an Iranian airliner to become a kamikaze bomber pilot staff. Three to keep the passengers at bay and two to murder the cockpit crew and steer into the target of opportunity.

It has been amply proven that a modern jetliner, laden with fuel, makes a most effective missile against fixed ground targets.

Iran Air was the last passenger operator of the venerable Boeing 707 with their last flights in 2013.

They’re in the market.

Wasn’t it Trump whom recently asked why the bid DIDN’T go to Boeing?

Nothing in the ‘deal’ to release the U.S. prisoners, why would anyone expect our ‘great negotiators’ to stipulate America biz be the benefactors of the lifted sanctions?

The folks who flew planes into the twin towers and pentagon weren’t Iranians

They were Saudis. Yet so many freepers want a war with Iran (as if the war with Iraq was so great we need another). Meanwhile, Saudi Arabia enjoys the friendship of all our elites, Republican and Democrat alike

You’re wasting your time, sir. I’m fully convinced that most people are simply too dumb to see the true enemy. Additionally, many of those who can actuallt see the true enemy realize that it is easier (from a political and financial level) to level their guns towards Iran than towards the likes of Saudi Arabia, Qatar or Pakistan. This is not to say Iran is a friendly nation to the US, but it is definitely below the likes of Saudi Arabia (world’s TRUE largest exporter of terrorism through its Sunni Wahhabi movement), Qatar (ISIS’ initial rise was funded by Qatari money) and Pakistan (nuclear power, supporter of terrorism, and biggest sponsor of the North Korean nuclear program).
