Six of the Royal Navy's most modern warships - worth £1billion each - all need new engines because they keep breaking down, it was revealed today.
The Ministry of Defence (MoD) has confirmed that its Type 45 destroyers need holes cut in their sides during major refits.
The ships, which have two engines already and are all less than ten years old, will need another engine to increase power amid concerns over their reliability.
Troubled waters: HMS Daring, the first of six destroyers ordered by the Royal Navy, lost power in the Atlantic on her first voyage to the US in 2009
The work will be staggered over a period of years so some ships remain available for operational commitments at all times.
The move follows reports of persistent problems with the engines and power systems on the ships which cost £1 billion each.
In 2014, HMS Dauntless had to abandon a training exercise and in 2009 HMS Daring lost power in the Atlantic on her first voyage to the US.
Each of the ships, which are described as 'part of the backbone of the Royal Navy', are fitted with two engines - a gas turbine and a diesel generator.
A Royal Navy source said the most likely action will be to add as many as two generators to 'bolster the power that's already there'.
He accepted that carrying out such maintenance just a few years into the ships' service was not 'normal'.

What is that hanging out the front, curb feelers?
They must be using the 6 liter Ford diesel engines.
That’s a lot of money to carry a 4.5” gun.
Oh, here’s the reason for the cost: “the first Royal Navy vessels to include gender-neutral living spaces”
Someone didn't read the story. They aren't replacing the engines, they are adding two to the engines already there so they will be able to keep sailing when the engines crap out.
It is the anchor, but just in case you were trying to make me laugh, the way things are going, they will NEED curb feelers!
I had a cousin who was an MG fanatic.
He always said one wasn’t enough, because you needed two for parts to keep one running.
The ship’s main armament is the VLS much like on the Ticonderoga class or Burke class.
Where you trying to hide- the south side of Chicago
sorry hit enter before completing my thought— very cool camo scheme
Because why pay thousands when you can pay millions to do the same job.
Sharp, thanks
