Good question.

My humble opinion .... because the politicians and the elite want power to get elected and it is easier to foster enmity between groups.

We should just like people as individuals that we get to know and trust and weed the bad ones away from us (or help them to change).

More Americans should visit another country and spend time with others in their country. They might appreciate America and Americans more.

Oh gosh. I guess I might as well let everyone know that I am a senior from Lincoln high school who aced the AP Calculus Test. I just wanted to let everyone know so I don't have to be questioned daily about it. I just don't want to keep it a secret any longer that I am brilliant.

/sarc

The school administration knew before the student -- perhaps they put out something on social media that was picked up by a news organization.

Lincoln High school is one of the worst schools in the worst school districts, Los Angeles Unified School District. However, this kid is highly motivated. Most of the kids in his school probably cannot pass Algebra I. This kid voluntarily enrolls in the hardest classes, works hard, and has good parents. Money does not have anything to do with it.

The kid is incredibly bright and obviously a hard worker. For him the future is bright. However, he must also have had a very good AP math program in his school, regardless of how bad the rest of the school is.

I took AP chemistry. Let’s just say that my score was “adequate.” I was able to skip freshman chemistry. It was not easy.

A stunning A.P. calculus performance from the whole class! Need more of THAT teacher.

A good teacher can really make a huge difference. My HS Calc teacher was amazing, we had the largest class ever, and the majority of us took the BC exam and scored 5s, some 4s, and maybe 2 3s. Wonder if he took the AB or BC level AP test?

What sucked though was that placed me out of Calc I and II in college, so my advisor tried to stick me in both Calc III and Differential Equations my very first semester. I was smart enough to at least not do that :p

I had to bail out of math when they started up with those Quadrophenia equations and those poly syllables.

Very true. I’d never been out of Texas until I joined the Naval Air Reserves when a Sr. in HS. While still 17, my squadron spent two weeks in San Diego (North Island NAS). I was first exposed to a different culture. Three months later I went active duty and spent more than a month in Charleston SC, then went to ship in Brooklyn Navy Ship Yard for over 3 months. .....I felt like Woody the bartender on the program “Cheers”! Fortunately, I quickly found other Texans in my division. ....Subsequent cruise to home port Mayport FL wasn’t such a shock.

I know all that blabber didn’t address your “other country” statement, but it certainly awakened me to differences just within this country.

When we cruised to the Mediterranean for many months it was quite enlightening. Italy, Greece, France, Libya, et al, seemed so undeveloped compared to the USA. Shanties in alleys with open fires; gangs of kids attacking US sailors to steal wallets, cigarettes, watches, lighters; open courtyards with rocks in front of holes in the ground that served as public toilets; butcher shops with skinned dogs and cats hanging in the windows; open prostitution, etc. ...I could go on, but I wont.

I posted this to affirm that your comment above is very correct. That tour of duty gave me great pride in my country and appreciation for our way of life in the USA.

That is great that you have had those opportunities. Your experiences have given you a new perspective.

I have traveled throughout the world and the US and have stayed in peoples homes and many have stayed at my home. People are people and it is wonderful to meet many from different cultures. I have Muslims pet my dog, when it is against their custom. I have had a judge, attorney and others from Nigeria tour the local county jail and they were amazed at the 3 hot meals with basketball, tv, etc. Many get their image from TV and are surprised to see reality is not the same.
