HUMBLE, Texas -

The DeLorean is going back to the future and into production.

We first saw the iconic time machine three decades ago in the movie, "Back to the Future", but the last time a real DeLorean was built was about 35 years ago. Soon that will change at the DeLorean Motor Company in Humble, Texas.

"It's fantastic. It is a game-changer for us. We've been wanting this to happen," DeLorean CEO Stephen Wynne said. "That was a green light to go back into production. That was prohibited. It was against the law to do it."

Wynne brought the DeLorean Motor Company to the Houston area in 1987. For the first time, the DeLorean will be manufactured on American soil.

Wynne said the company will build replica 1982 DeLoreans under a low-volume manufacturing bill approved by the federal government. He estimates he has enough supplies in stock to build about 300 cars. He hopes to go from building one a month to one a week.

He would be better off using the money he makes to invest in a new DeLorean with updated styling, engine, and electronics.

I agree.
So long as the critical components are "old technology," and thus EMP-proof.

Ironic, for a car from the past!

As a die hard BTTF fan...I love the idea of seeing these on the street! But, I want to see Doc and Clara in the front seat and a Mr. Fusion on the back, please.

“But, what does the the Volt do upon reaching 88 mph!”

If it reaches that. I can’t get my Nissan Leaf above 94.

True, because with full battery the Volt can travel 53 miles before turning on its engine.

WHAT was against the law? WHAT changed to now allow whatever “it” is?

Yea, that's the main thing I noticed/was wondering. Probably some kind of trademark bullshit, but if he bought out the tooling/parts/name from the original builder, I don't see why that would matter.

Either the batteries catch fire, or it explodes. :)

It can be painted, although not many are since the stainless is kind of the trademark of the design.

At least they say they are installing a more powerful engine.

My lawnmower has more horsepower than the stock engine. The thing was only good for school zones.

At $100K I think I’ll keep my truck!

The joke back in the day was that the Delorean was the only car that would drive down the highway sucking up the white lines along the way.

This low volume law seems like a “got mine” keep out the rest law.

It should allow for more cars to be built.
