Are they in a panic over Trump? They've been zinging him for decades, going back to the 80's, long before they thought he'd become a pol. He was just too sleazy to resist needling. They're not in a panic over him - they're just amazed that a GOP that tends to be extremely moralistic has allowed a sleazy, money-grubbing adulterer like Trump become front-runner for the GOP presidential nomination. They're running the same kinds of stories about Trump as they were about Romney, even though Romney was as squeaky clean as Trump is slimy. The difference is that nothing has stuck to the Teflon Don - yet.
If elected, this CIC (Compromiser In Chief) will spent more time bent over the other aisle with his butt crack showing that any other "conservative" president in history.
Hell it would not surprise me if he does not change back to the Democratic party while in office just to say he was the first to do it.
