Anti-abortion leaders urge 'anyone but Trump'
The Hill ^ | January 26, 2016 | Peter Sullivan

A group of national and Iowa-based leaders of anti-abortion groups are urging voters to support "anyone but Trump."

The 10 leaders, including Jenifer Bowen, executive director of Iowa Right to Life, and Marjorie Dannenfelser, president of Susan B. Anthony List, wrote a letter to Iowa voters ahead of Monday's caucuses, warning against Donald Trump, one of the leading candidates.

"On the issue of defending unborn children and protecting women from the violence of abortion, Mr. Trump cannot be trusted and there is, thankfully, an abundance of alternative candidates with proven records of pro-life leadership whom pro-life voters can support," the letter states. "We have come to this conclusion after having listened patiently to numerous debates and news reports, but most importantly to Donald Trump's own words."

Iowa's Republican voters are known for their social conservatism and the groups' letter could play an important role ahead of the caucuses. Trump is in a close race with Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Texas) in the state.

A super-PAC backing Cruz is hitting Trump in a television ad for saying in a 1999 interview: "I am pro-choice in every respect."

Trump says that he has since changed his position. A Trump campaign spokeswoman responded to the letter on Tuesday by pointing to Trump's op-ed in the Washington Examiner last week.

"Let me be clear - I am pro-life," Trump wrote. "I did not always hold this position, but I had a significant personal experience that brought the precious gift of life into perspective for me."

The letter refers to other statements Trump has made, like saying former Sen. Scott Brown, a Republican who describes himself as pro-choice, could make a "very good" vice presidential candidate.

"It would be a disaster to have a vice president who disagrees" on abortion, the letter states.

The anti-abortion leaders point out that the next president is likely to make several appointments to the Supreme Court, which could have bearing on efforts to overturn Roe v. Wade.

Beyond policy, the leaders also say they are "disgusted" by Trump's treatment of women, including Fox host Megyn Kelly and rival candidate Carly Fiorina.

"He has impugned the dignity of women, most notably Megyn Kelly, he mocked and bullied Carly Fiorina, and has through the years made disparaging public comments to and about many women," the letter states. "Further, Mr. Trump has profited from the exploitation of women in his Atlantic City casino hotel which boasted of the first strip club casino in the country."

I have to say that I didn’t have a problem with what he said to, and about Kelly. His comments about Fiorina, however, were way out of line.

FR THREAD: Jan 26, 2016: Cruz Winning Iowa Evangelicals

"The new Quinnipiac University Iowa poll released today finds that Cruz has doubled his lead over Trump among the critical Evangelical voters. Cruz now leads Trump among Iowa Evangelicals by 12 points - 39 percent to 27 percent. The Iowa Republican Caucus is a two-man race with Trump at 31 percent and Cruz at 29 percent among likely Republican Caucus participants. Marco Rubio is at 13 percent. No other candidate is above 7 percent.

Cruz leads Trump:

50 - 34 percent among self-professed Tea Party members;
49 - 29 percent among voters describing themselves as "very conservative."

Trump leads Cruz:

29 - 21 percent among self-identified "somewhat conservative" voters;
37 - 6 percent among voters claiming to be "moderate" or "liberal."

The new poll is virtually unchanged from the January 11 Quinnipiac poll which found Trump at 31 percent, with 29 percent for Cruz and 15 percent for Rubio.".......

IF the elitist GOP and the media.. and the Washington club had not come down so hard on Trump in the beginning. IF they had not insulted Trump’s followers.. just maybe they would not be looking at a Trump Presidency about now.

They fueled his rise to the top by their insults and their blatant disgust and hatred. They made the angry voters, even angrier by insulting, name calling, calling them dumb and back woods type, not educated and not informed.

Try that one on a group that’s already angry ... and see how far it gets ya’.

You’re playing the victim card when Trump and his supporters have never been anything of the sort.

You sound like a Democrat.

Surely you can provide a link that debunks Trump's statements about Fiorina?

Since Paul Ryan is not running for president, your comment is a non sequitur....

When the Daily Caller's Jamie Weinstein asked Trump if he would have become pro-life if that child had been a loser instead of a "total superstar," Trump replied: "Probably not, but I've never thought of it. I would say no, but in this case it was an easy one because he's such an outstanding person."

Pro-lifers hackles should go up.

Do not remember all those hits but did see this.

“Mr. Trump may be an ignoramus or a ignominious liar. But his sudden popularity is cause to worry about the mental and spiritual state of the American electorate.”

Millions of conservatives are not fooled by this chameleon candidate. They will never vote for him because their principles will not allow it. Trump will not be president.
