Teens Facing Expulsion for Spelling Racial Slur on T-Shirts for Class Photo
Yahoo ^ | Jan. 25, 2016 | Beth Greenfield

An ignorant moment among six high school seniors - who spelled out a racial slur with lettered T-shirts they were wearing for a school photo and posted it to social media on Friday - has ignited national outrage that shows no sign of stopping.

Civil rights activists are even planning to hold a protest on Monday at the school, Desert Vista High School in Phoenix. That's where the six white girls, part of a larger group of students who wore lettered T-shirts and stood together to spell out "Best You've Ever Seen Class of 2016" for a yearbook photo, rearranged themselves for a private photo. For that one, they stood together spelling out the word "NI**ER," laughing and smiling at their spelling trick.

A Change.org petition with more than 37,000 signatures is calling for the girls to be expelled and for the principal, Christine Barela, to be fired. "Arizona has been stricken with another blatant expression of racism and ignorance," the petition says, seemingly referring to another recent social media controversy in which an Arizona State University student tweeted the N-word along with a photo of herself and a friend holding freshly picked cotton.

N came from “SEEN”. The Gs were actually asterisks*.

Probably a reasonable sentence. They were trying to be racist without being racist, but you can’t play that game with this topic, in America, at this time.

Looks more like NIPPE, with a magnifying glass at the end (just to make sure we can see it).

I fail to see where the principal is to blame. But yes I think expulsion would be appropriate. I think too they can kiss any scholarship offers goodbye.

I never could figure why anyone would think that to be a term of endearment. But I am 63 and I remember blacks using that term amongst themselves. Indeed when they did not like another black person they would use the 6 character spelling version, instead of the 5 character spelling version.

Not really sure what race NI**ER refers to, but if they had spelled it NI##ER, well then, that would be outrageous!

I agree with the principals decision on this one. Five days sounds about right.

The more this happens, the more tempted I am to go back to my childhood, when I regularly referred to black people by that term. I meant no harm by it; it was simply a word.

Nowadays, the Grievance Whores want to dictate what words I can use, which brings out the reactionary in me.

Actually it looks like NI**E, with either an R or a magnifying glass as the last symbol. No doubt though it had millions running to their safe spaces.

I'm so sick of social media coupled with political correctness and the problems they have wrought on society as a whole.

Ooops I typed before my brain had time to work. I should have written “suspension would be appropriate” For some reason I was thinking that expulsion did not always mean a permanent ban from attending school, my mistake.

These are not ignorant children. They knew even with the asteriks the word they meant to convey and that it would be deeply offensive. Had they done this in a way that could not be associated with the school I would defend their right to be offensive idiots and argue against any punishment. But this was done (as far as I know) on campus. So suspension is appropriate.

That’s possible if they’re fans of nippers! I know I like to use nippers for cutting sheet metal for some of my projects!

Build a fake bomb while muslim, and the school would be cowering in seconds to ingratiate itself to you.

Why can black people call each other this term over and over, but white people can’t?

It's called a double standard.
