When I was in high school, and then in college, National Review was my go-to magazine for exploring conservative thought. It’s writers were excellent.
It has been years since I read that magazine and about a year since I checked out their NRO site.
I think they may still be against amnesty, but that is about all. Their writers now are all small minded hacks.

Define conservative:
Anyone who takes seriously his oath of office to uphold the Constitution.
Anyone for small government
Anyone for traditional values
Anyone for less spending
Anyone for strong foreign policy without asking the UN for permission.
Maybe more.
Many people are single issue just one of these and vote on that single issue. They are conservative, even though it is only on one issue because that issue drives their action.
