While the nation's legal scholars differ over the exact meaning of the Constitution's requirement that a person must be a "natural born citizen" to become president, they're unanimous in saying Ted Cruz is wrong about an important point.
"As a legal matter, the question is quite straightforward and settled law," Cruz has said. "People will continue to make political noise about it, but as a legal matter it is quite straightforward.
In fact, the experts say, it is neither settled nor straightforward.
It's not settled -- because the Constitution does not define "natural born," a phrase that appears in the nation's founding document only once.
And though the federal courts have chewed on it from time to time, the U.S. Supreme Court has never officially said what it means.
It's not straightforward -- because at the time the Constitution was written there were different ideas about what the phrase meant and competing legal theories about where the power to confer citizenship came from.
The meaning of the term is so unsettled that scores of constitutional experts have been writing about it in the weeks since Donald Trump made it an issue in the 2016 campaign.

My son was born overseas in 1972, to two American citizens. His birth had to be registered CRBA to be recognized as a citizen.
I could not just waltz back into the US and my son declare himself a citizen because he felt like it.
He was made a citizen by virtue of paperwork, ie not natural born as I was or as my husband was.
It is not settled, it is not nonsense.

Oh, I've seen it here at least a dozen times in the last week already.
They emphasize the angel that's he's the most conservative candidate, the only true conservative and a genuine defender of the Constitution.

Ted and Levin says he's good to go and that's all they need to hear.
Besides, Obama got away with it.

And that is the problem for Cruz.
Because it is not settled law, doubt can be created.
And doubt creates lost votes.
Maybe not huge numbers, but enough lost votes to lose.
Basically It's Over if Hillary get elected. So, lets focus on issues and beating Hillary on November 8th.
Through some bizarre feat of magic and/or corruption, Obama was able to produce a birth certificate from a US State showing he was born to a US Citizen mother.
Not enough for me, but enough for most.

Yeah, trump was not going to himself make it an issue. But, did the ineligible Cruz take that olive branch? NO ineligible Cruz threw Trump’s citizen mother, before trump was born under his political bus.... Nasty bit of politicking by ineligible Cruz.
Natural born is like a birthright... Cruz does not qualify... And he knows it.

Not quite. “Citizen” is capitalized and “natural born” has never been dealt with under the understanding that at least one parent needs to be American. George Romney and John McCain should never have run by this logic.
Ted Cruz is eligible to be a Senator. He has been a US Citizen for longer than 9 years.
lefties harasses Bush the younger over draft dodging for years too. Then Reagan about iran contra. Par for the course.
If Cruz has a CRBA, he’d have already produced it. It doesn’t make sense that he would have his records sealed. Both of these infer that he knows he isn’t eligible to be president.
So much for ‘’principled constitutional conservative’’. Only if it doesn’t conflict with his ambition.
