I appreciate the sheriff's words but I have to wonder if they're do this to avoid doing their jobs. Just there to clean up the mess afterwards. That is their job.
Unless a local law enforcement officer happens to be present when a crime is occurring, you absolutely cannot expect them to defend you. Either you defend yourself and they clean up the mess afterwards or you don't defend yourself and they clean up the mess afterwards.
