Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro is using special decree powers to declare an economic emergency in the oil-dependent nation.
The decree giving Maduro 60 days to enact sweeping reform was published Friday in the official gazette just hours before the president is expected to deliver his annual state of the union address.

This emergency has much more to do with undermining the power of the new opposition legislature than any economic issue. He’d be happy to keep the people in misery as long as he is in charge.
They were in an economic emergency for years. When a country is so far down that it runs out of basics like toilet paper they’re gone.

So, like our President, Mr Maduro is simply ignoring his new opposition-majority legislature and going it on his own.
This will not result in more toilet paper.
