While I like both of these candidates and will vote for the eventual winner of the two, I sense that Sen. Cruz made a tactical error in his assessment of NY values. The topic has no intrinsic value electorally and actually is divisive, something we already have in our current leadership (or lack there-of). IMO, Cruz will never win NY, his opinion in this matter would have better served him had he kept it to himself.
A perfectly valid way of framing the election is over values. Trump has had most of his life the most liberal NY values. Cruz values smaller government, Trump loves big government solutions, Cruz values morality, Trump supports the gay mafia and is colleagues of the NY mafia. Trump is ok with graft and pay-to-play corruption, Cruz finds it distasteful. These are big differences and in an election the differences need to be highlighted. If you find it divisive that conservatives do not want to unite with liberalism than you and I share a different vision for liberty.
Cruz was never going to win NY, or any of the Yankee NE states anyway... And the rest of the country heard him just fine.
