Donald Trump is finding himself with strange bedfellows after Thursday's Republican debate, after he gave a rousing defense of "New York values" in response to attacks by Texas Sen. Ted Cruz.

Among those who seconded his comments: prominent Democrats Hillary Clinton, New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio, and New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo.

I guess this is the "crossover vote" that everyone is panting over? So happy for the bipartisanship. /S

Reagan sold conservatism to democrats rather than pander to liberals.

That Cruz moment actually reminded me of the scene in Oh Brother Where Art Thou where Homer Stokes reveals to everyone that he is a member of a "certain society" that doesn't need named and then got run out of town on a rail for being an ahole.

Of course, Trump is the door to the White House for liberalism this year. Clinton may struggle, but liberalism has champions on both sides this year.

Trump, who has demonstrated that he has no guiding principles, will be a welcome relief to progressives and liberals afraid of a Cruz presidency. Mark my words, the press is going to soon have a real love affair with Trump if Clinton falters.

A President Trump will rediscover his “acceptance” of abortion. He will “realize” much of what he has promised is impossible to do without congress, so he will be able to place the blame on congress for not fulfilling his principle campaign promises to build a wall, and keep out Muslims.

In the end, all the Trump supporters will see, that a President Trump, without the wall, and without the congress, will simply be just another New York liberal who will then appoint 3 or 4 Supreme Court Justices who share his New York Values.

I fear you are correct.

Here two days too late is the line Cruz could have used to turn Trump’s ridiculous invoking of 9/11 to justify New York values:

“No, Mr. Trump, those are not New York values. Those are American values. “

That would have shut down Trump and shut up the New York media.

Smell is the most powerful memory inducer there is. DT has made millions of liberals relive one of the most horrific periods of their lives, ultimately reminding them that their city and they are vulnerable, especially in light of what’s happening around the world. DT showed he had NY’s backs when they were verbally attacked, leading one to surmise, after all DT has said about security that he would actually try to protect them and not leave them out to dry like hrc did to BG. I see this translating to votes.

Attacking NYC was stupid—AND Trump (from NYC) just HAD TO respond and defend.
Imagine what would have resulted had he NOT!!

Seemed pretty damn good to me.

The Donald said nothing that Rudy Giuliani wold not have said in reply to the same charges. New York is, after all, The Donald’s home town, and while there are many things despicable about New York today (in the absence of Giuliani), its response immediately after the 9-11 attack was nothing short of magnificent and in the noblest tradition of anywhere in America.

And if for only a moment, New York then did represent the best of America.

Of course, it took them only a relatively short time to revert to all the old stereotypes. But even New Yorkers can rise to being Americans if faced with a sufficiently large challenge to their liberal notions.

There are 3 big issues this year, 2 of which are critical to conservatives in the future.

1. How do we deal with the problem of Islamic fundamentalism in general? This is one that the country can eventually solve, but not if the country is undermined from within.

The remaining 2 are critical to conservatives:

2. How do we change the course of legal and illegal immigration to change it from a feeder program for socialists? If this isn’t stopped, there will be no chance for conservatives in the future.

3. How to we get the right judges on the Supreme Court? Similar to #2, without the right judges we will lose what we have.

*****

for me the latter 2 questions determine how I vote.

Trump is obviously good on #2 and an utter unknown on #3. People criticize Roberts as a Supreme Court Justice, but don’t realize that he’s 95% of what we want, where a Ginsberg, Sotomayar, or Kagen are 0% of what we want. We can’t afford another one like that.. or even another Kennedy in exchange for a Scalia. The gun and other decisions have been far too close as it is.

Total upside victory for Trump. He devastated Cruz, who walked into a round house punch like an amateur.

The attack by Cruz allowed Trump to display his very deep compassionate human side, which is real, but has been over shadowed by bluster.

In addition, Trumps response elicited compliments from his most ardent detractors, thus expanding his appeal, all without compromising or pandering on policy issues

The measure of the victory for Trump is found in the applause he received from Cruz. When is the last time you saw that happen? One politician attacks another and the defense is applauded by the attacker.

Cruz, and all Trump detractors got Schlonged.

No, Trump’s guiding principle (his only one) is making Trump great (in his own mind).

Talk is cheap, and Trump is nothing more than a used car salesman. Only a fool believes everything he is told when the person making the promises has been demonstrated to have no principles.

Look into Trump’s promises sometime. Eastern Shuttle, “I will make the Trump Shuttle a diamond, a premier airline!” He ran it into the dirt in 3 years. Shady dealings with casino buyouts and bankruptcies - where investors get left holding the bag, and he walks away with money in his pocket.

If you are a true conservative (odds are doubtful on FR these days), and if Trump becomes President, you will rue the day you supported him. But then it will be too late because you will have a liberal with New York Values calling the shots, and only a inept congress to try and stop him.

He is the white Obama (without the oratory skills).

:: he will be able to place the blame on congress for not fulfilling his principle campaign promises to build a wall, and keep out Muslims ::

From what I can tell, the legislation by Congress for these already exists. It is being ignored for political expediency. All Trump (or Cruz) need do is execute (since, you see, it’s the Executive Branch) that legislation.

Wasn’t it just a few months ago when 1,000’s marched in the streets of NYC, tying up traffic and shutting down commerce, to protest police “brutality”?

Weren’t members of the NYPD roundly criticized for turning their backs on DeBlasio at a press conference?

Now, on a political dime, the NYPD is made up of heroes who personify the virtuous attributes of all New Yorkers.

Give me a break.
