--SNIP-- In interviews in wedding chapels and casinos, all around this city of stretch limos, slot machines and neon signs, Mexicans who make up so much of the workforce said it would be far more meaningful to elect the first Mexican American president than the first Latino. Many said they would vote for a non-Latino over a Cuban American.
In two days of interviews, not a single Mexican said he or she supported Rubio or Cruz, and even some Cubans said they donât plan to support either Cuban American candidate.

The Cubans I know look down on Mexicans. Similar to differing Asian nationalities.
Ah, the glories of Tribalism!
Hurrah for Balkanization!
E Pluribus Unum... oh that’s so passe’, so Old Latin!

Years ago i used to work in a predominately Puerto Rican neighborhood in Chicago. The PRs hated the Mexicans and the Mexicans hated the PRs. For myself, being a white Irish/German/Polish guy, I couldn’t tell the difference. Took me years to figure it out.
Isn’t it nice how the liberal media keeps reminding us of candidates ethnicity? I hadn’t even thought about it. Must be a result of my white privilege.
But this makes manipulating them so much more complicated.
Subtext is - good thing for the republicans that they have a loyal Mexican running. Ole’ Jeb!
So then, NOT American I take it?
Why? So he or she can make the United States more like Mexico?
The day this does happen, the U.S. is officially over with.
This Gringo/Basque/Spaniard raised in Mexico married a Cuban.
We both could care a less about Rubio. Still a toss up between Cruz/Trump.
I wouldn’t vote a Mexican in office even if he was George P Bush.
Gringos think all “hispanics” like spicy food too.
Cubans and, from what I have seen, Peruvians... are nothing like Mexicans. That they can speak Spanish means very little. They are about as alike as Vermont and Texas.
Odd. I was under the impression they both were AMERICANS.
Or perhaps other priorities are considered of more importance to the Distinguishing Person.
Gets no bloody traction here!
Either you are an american, and willing to proudly admit it no matter the circumstances, or you are NOT an american.
In which case why are you running for office and why would any true american think you are worthy of representing us and vote you into office?
The Cubans I know look down on Mexicans.

Mexicans are majority Mestizo (Indian-Spanish mix), whereas Cubans are majority Anglo (Spain). From things I’ve read over the years, the two cultures just don’t get along well.

Good observation kik! Me too.
This is the primary season where candidates have to appeal to voters inside the party. Different calculus. In the general election if Cruz or Rubio are the nominee they will develop outreach programs, Spanish language adverts and the like. They are not going to spend the resources on that in the primaries without a clear advantage to be gained by it.
