Donald Trump talks at a fourth-grade level. Maybe that’s why the Fox News audience loves him

It's a cliche to say that democratic states can't function properly without an informed electorate. But it’s absolutely true. And this is why, heading into the 2016 election year, I'm nervous about the future. With Donald Trump leading the Republican presidential contenders, even many Republican die-hards are shaking in their boots.

But Trump isn't the cause, just the symptom. The deeper cause is a strain of anti-intellectualism that runs through the roots of American culture. And while this strain is found on both sides of the political spectrum (see some liberals on vaccines and chemtrails), it's mostly concentrated among religious conservatives on the political right. For those who espouse anti-intellectualism, conspiracy theories have the same clout as legitimate science, the opinions of non-experts are just as credible as those of the experts, and ideology takes precedence over the cold hard facts.

No liberal can be taken seriously when he chides anyone about critical thinking. And Trump is certainly not a product of the religious right, the Tea Party, or any traditional conservative movement in the USA. He’s a populists spouting some conservative values, like the border, guns, and trade. He is not and never has been a movement conservative.

"The point is that when a large portion of the electorate is fooled into adopting an ideology of ignorance, spaces open up for charlatans, frauds and demagogues to gain political power over the masses."

What a powerfully accurate description of the so-called "progressive" political influence whose ideas have dominated America's political and educational systems for decades now!

How else could such "frauds and demagogues" have "transformed" America from a place of individual liberty, opportunity, creativity, productivity and plenty into a near-welfare-state mentality?

With respect, voting against your own and your nation's interest, as when so many voted for Romney, is not an alternative, it is an act of destruction.

I voted against my and my nation's interest often enough when I voted "against" Democrats by voting for whatever leftist Republican was put before me, for 30-plus years. So I know what I'm talking about. You only get to vote FOR, and there are consequences when people vote for liberals regardless of party.

Conservatism and liberty will only make headway when people start voting for what they want to win.

Too many people are prepared to vote for what they want to lose out of fear or spite, both of which may be good warning systems, but which are extremely bad guides for making intelligent choices.

Well, after the left has taken over the public and post-secondary education system for the past 40 years, I’m not surprised that anyone has to speak at a fourth-grade level to be understood by American voters.

Why do all men on the left have that “jama boy” look?
Most are fags or doubt that they are actually men. They even go to the trouble of marrying and fathering to hide their gayness! I was at a picnic last year where a father, who has a PHD from Berkeley, was spouting on just to hear himself talk about the most inane subjects. He looked down his nose, raised his eyebrows and carried on like an pompous ass.
Many asked who he was and the answer was that he was invited because his kid was a classmate of one of the other children. No wife there, she can't stand to see him flaunt.
His having a PHD from Berkeley lowers that school another few notches in my rating.

I disagree totally that Trump speaks on a 4th-grade level. He uses a kind of humor that is only appreciated by a sophisticated crowd. Leaving the ends off some of his sentences, as someone has accused him of, is part of the shtick. Fourth-graders and liberals would hardly get it.

Most important, his ideas are profound in their ability to cut through to the deeper truth not clouded by hemming and hawing and obfuscation for various purposes. As he says, he’s not a politician, so the clarity of his thought comes shining through and is treasured by those with vision and intellect.

Much of what passes for political writing and thought is a desperate attempt to appear novel and brilliant and doesn’t have anything that resonates with the people.

Perhaps TRUMP should talk at a more advanced level like...

“I Don’ts Feels No Way Tard!” like the Hillary does!

I have two degrees, one advanced. I engage in ACTUAL critical thinking for my real world work and actually read his crap. I'm a Ted Cruz voter, and will not vote for Donald Trump either.

This Phil Torres guy's a f'ing idiot and a bigot who parrots the same old talking points and uses Colbert as his source. The problem with what self-proclaimed intellectuals claim is that they aren't real intellectuals anymore. Academia is about cliques, PC, and ideology first, not real learning. If you don't parrot the company line in academia, you fail. Academia is failing and it's due to the culture.

As much as I dislike leftist men, I still can’t quite fathom why they all choose to wear such faggy-looking glasses. The thick rimmed thing is a dead giveaway that you’re dealing with a totalitarian pantywaist.

Well, if Trump is hoping to communicate to Democrats, maybe fourth-grade comprehension do the trick. Personally, I’d expect it’s closer to first grade, but whatever works...

Plan language, not weasel words. Can’t imagine President Trump saying: Well that depends on what is means . . .

Just so long as he builds that wall. At this point, this is about all that matters. If we can stop this invasion, maybe there will be enough time to fix this mess we are in.

Compare the Constitution to Obamacare. Our laws (and leaders) are supposed to be accessible to everyone not just those who are “properly educated”.

The left doesn’t seem concerned that a lot of children can’t read at a 4th grade level at high school graduation (or when they drop out) so the left should be happy to have a candidate who more people can understand.

Dear Liberal,

Here's an interesting question: Why are your candidates not speaking at or below the 4th grade level?

Admittedly, nuanced positions require verbal gymnastics to try to cover every condition they might be applied in. But since your candidates are supposedly representing immigrants and minorities, are you not in actuality excluding those groups from the discussion by speaking over their heads?

Personally, I'm sick and tired of the institutionalized racism inherent within Democrat campaigns. One of the many holdovers from the dark days of liberalism where racism was so rampant that a former senate leader used to be a grand dragon in the KKK.

It is about time that Democrats stop being so exclusionary and tone down their verbiage to be far more inclusive in their campaign message. Stop excluding Latinos and Blacks from the national discussion that campaigns are supposed to be through your wall of words they can't possibly understand.

...The average person doesn't need flowery language or legal speak...

I would like to speak to Trump supporters in this comment.

Isn't Trump a rare blessing?  Most business people have no patience for the silly PC language and head fake games the politicians play.  So we should be thankful that someone with his abilities has jumped in and taken the heat.   The man is an awesome American patriot and warrior!

It's sweet justice that the American people will choose this master builder, entrepreneur extraordinaire, doer, job creator, and guy who gets things done.

We must continue to support the man by attending his rallies, cheering for him, posting on FR, and doing what he suggests we do such as supporting fair media and ignoring the others.

It's the least we can do for a man whose mission is save the country not just from corrupt politicians, but also from the corrupt 40% of voters who feel America owes them a free lunch.

Unfortunately, the dire prophecy of Ben Franklin has come true in our republic.   See my tagline.
