In Iowa, Trump intensifies ‘birther’ attack against Cruz

Donald Trump intensified his criticism of Ted Cruz at two Iowa campaign rallies on Saturday, urging voters to reject the Texas senator by saying his Canadian birth raises serious questions about his eligibility to become president.

"He was born in Canada. I guess his parents voted in Canada," Trump said at an afternoon rally in Clear Lake. "So if you were born in Canada, immediately it's a little bit of a problem."

Trump added: "You cannot put somebody there that's gonna go in ... he's going to be immediately sued."

Earlier Saturday, Trump said at a rally in Ottumwa that Cruz "has to straighten out his problems," a veiled reference to the so-called "birther" issue. But he declined to elaborate further, saying, "We'll discuss that later."

Cruz, however, is a naturally-born U.S. citizen, and most legal experts agree that he is qualified to be commander-in-chief.

But recently, he has had to aggressively push back on questions pushed from Trump about his eligibility for the presidency. He renounced his dual Canadian citizenship in 2014, and on Friday, Cruz's campaign shared with the conservative website Breitbart a copy of his mother's birth certificate showing her born in the United States.

I have always been a Cruz guy but I think Trump has a point. Regardless I think it’s all about winning at this point. I will vote for either one but I think Trump is what the nation needs. Trump/Cruz will be a great ticket

How can he be against Obamacare but likes Single Payer?

Because he's not a real conservative. But you're right. Trump has flipped and flopped on the whole birther thing all year. If he wins I can see him offer it to Cruz and deny he ever questioned his citizenship. But I just don't see Cruz accepting it. And that has nothing to do with the birther nonsense. Cruz wants to be president and being Trump's VP would kill any hopes of that.

Hey logical me do you expect the dogs peeing on one tree to ever see the whole forest? That would take a bit of logic, something that seem to be in limited supply around FR.

the clinton donor doubles down on being stupid.

Did bill clinton tell him to go with this tactic when he encouraged Trump to run for president...

Trump can not put Cruz on the ticket without a verified NBC status by a federal judge.

Which means there could never be a Trump/Cruz ticket like I said.

I don’t understand how anyone besides the Dems can question Cruz’s citizenship.

If Levin says he is that is good enough for me:

“That makes him a naturalized citizen, not a natural born citizen.”

No, it does not. Naturalization is what happens AFTER birth, and Ted was born a US citizen. Therefor, he is not a naturalized citizen, which leaves...

Most legal experts agree? What kind of a statement is that? Seems there are many legal experts who DISAGREE.

Trump is becoming the new Dirty David Dewhurst.

*******************
I listened to the clip...link below. I couldn’t believe it! He was creating a completely false narrative.

He said that Lawrence Tribe said “it was a problem”. Lawrence Tribe did say the issue was not “settled law” (never adjudicated); but he said in his view, Cruz was eligible.

Trump also said both Ted’s parent’s voted in Canada.
His father may have- but his mom was always an American citizen and couldn’t have voted in Canada.

Bad enough raising the issue, misrepresenting the facts
is despicable.

I think Cruz and Trump actually support each other. Trump’s attack is on an absolutely safe issue for Cruz. No harm done.

Levin judgement is always questionable, he supported Orin, Rubio, Ryan etc. One day he will dance for them, next day he will scream. Levin is just crazy.

“Cruz had to renounce the Canadian citizenship he was born into by virtue of his father’s citizenship and residency status.”

That is true. Now would that not, on its own, give someone some kind of pause, now really? I mean, did the Founders really think that a citizen of a foreign country should be president of the United States? Never mind, even IF he is a citizen? I realize that I am a terrible person for bringing this up.

Trump has been carrying Cruz long enough.

Trump barely carries the drool that comes out of his mouth. To think Trump is carrying Cruz is asinine.

Tribe said it was not settled law.

Someone would sue Cruz to settle it.

No one disputes he is a citizen. The question is he a natural born citizen as required by the Constitution, The issue needs to be resolved by the courts sooner rather than later. We need to resolve the definition of natural born citizen.

You don’t recall the Reagan/Bush primary? Cruz is where he is largely because of riding Trump’s coat tails, if he wants to be Trump’s VP he has to show he has the chops for the general....

What Birther attack?

Trump said the Democrats have threatened to file Suit the moment Cruz gets the nod and that the Cruz Campaign should head it off.

That nutcase Democrat Congressman from Florida talked about filing Suit Months ago should Cruz get Nominated. Is this something new, absolutely not.

Heck, I’m a Cruz (1), Trump (2) Supporter and this whole blame Trump for shedding the light on the Democrat’s plan to go after Cruz is ridiculous.
