or

He’s sick of being on the sidelines watching a bunch of incompetents in his mind.

Either is awkward phrasing.

Awkward phrasing, but that is the way humans talk, in disjointed sentences. When they write, if they can write well, it comes out in an organized fashion.

Were he to rewrite the sentence, he would say, "watching a bunch of, in his mind, incompetents." Incompetence also works. In any event, the snide remark was about using "incompetence" instead of "incompetents" when he was speaking and wasn't the one who transcribed it, and either one works in the context of the remarks.

A prime example of TDS, known colloquially as Trump On The Brain. Obama and Hillary have it. Jeb and Kasich have it. Too many people here have it.
