Donald Trump Says He Favors Big Tariffs on Chinese Exports [and other topics w/ NYT ed board]

Donald J. Trump said he would favor a 45 percent tariff on Chinese exports to the United States, proposing the idea during a wide-ranging meeting with members of the editorial board of The New York Times.

Mr. Trump also spoke at length about the standoff with armed protesters who last Saturday seized the headquarters at a federal wildlife refuge in Oregon, suggesting that he would have called the leader of the group to try to make a deal to end it -- and would have acted against them if negotiations failed because "you cannot let people take over federal property."

In addressing the trade imbalance with China, Mr. Trump addressed an issue that has been a focus of his speeches going back to 2011, when he considered running for president when President Obama was seeking re-election. In the editorial board meeting, which was held Monday, Mr. Trump said that the relationship with China needs to be restructured.

"The only power that we have with China," Mr. Trump said, "is massive trade."

"I would tax China on products coming in," Mr. Trump said. "I would do a tariff, yes -- and they do it to us."

Mr. Trump added that he's "a free trader," but that "it's got to be reasonably fair."

"I would do a tax. and the tax, let me tell you what the tax should be ... the tax should be 45 percent," Mr. Trump said.

Yup ... he's a "free trader," all right, who proposes a 45 percent tariff and has apparently never heard of the WTO. Or the Smoot Hawley tariff, for that matter.

If Trump were serious, or knew what he was talking about, he would propose bringing a WTO case against China. There are many Chinese practices which would be vulnerable to such s challenge. Of course, our hands are not entirely clean either, but we cheat less than does China.

Many times Trump has stated that he would never have to actually impose a tariff because as soon as he announced it the ChiComs would fall into line and I agree with him. Sometimes Rhetoric is a good thing.

Tariffs worked fine during the industrial revolution in the days prior to the income tax. The government generated sufficient revenue, the economy was strong and trade wasn’t a one way street like the so called free trade that exists today. We simply matched what other governments imposed on us.

What you propose would concern the Chinks with losing face and spark a trade war. There’s many reasons the Don is a gazillionaire...maybe consider that before your next post!

It’s just his opening bid in the negotiations. The art of the deal.

The Chicom economy is tanking.

You let it continue to tank.

Sounds like a great idea!!
Increase US employment and tax revenues.
Much better than Mr. Obamas secret, hot deals for special cronies TPP deals.
S Korea, Taiwan, Malaysia, Indonesia can take up the slack for cheap junk And we can sell our stuff to them.
More jobs and better jobs is a program that will bring in even more Reagan democrats to Trump.

Honestly this is insane. We have a global supply chain now and China is a major economic power, by purchasing power larger than ours. China is not an export dependent country any more and in fact they want to get away from that.

But ... he didn't really MEAN it!

And if he DID mean it, the resulting depression would be a GOOD thing! It will keep those immigrants from wanting to come here.

See, he's always thinking. He's so brilliant.

Gag.
