DENTON – An arrest has been made in connection with the New Year's Day murder of Sara Mutschlechner, a student at the University of North Texas.

Eric Jamal Johnson, 20, was taken into custody after being located in Yuma, Arizona by the U.S. Marshals Service Tuesday morning after a warrant for his arrest was issued by the Denton Police Department. Johnson is a Marine and was stationed at the Marine Corps Air Station in Yuma, according to Marine Corps Public Affairs Officer Capt. Justin Smith.

Johnson was arrested at the base at 6:30 a.m. Tuesday.

Denton Police said Wednesday that they believe Johnson was the shooter, and that four others were in his SUV when he pulled the trigger. Police are treating the four others as persons of interest, and are working to interview them, said Denton Police spokesman Officer Shane Kizer.

Denton police detectives were in Arizona Wednesday to interview Johnson.

The want to extradite him to Denton County, which could take several days to several weeks, depending on whether Johnson waives extradition.

Authorities have searched Johnson's SUV, but wouldn't go into detail on what they found. They are still searching for the murder weapon.

I graduated High school in Denton in 1974, when there was still only a single High school there.

spent many hours over on North Texas State campus (which is now UNT).

If they get him back, and if there are any special circumstances, he could get death.

And from what I have heard from friends down there about this...he should.

Doesn't make sense

drunk or no ... a marine should have more control over cold blooded murder

Getting into a fight ... yeah ... but pulling a trigger on a cute chick ?

Much more to the story, imo

It is easy enough to figure out. The bros felt slighted when the night was ending and the white girls rejected the bros offer of muh diks. This was simply an unassailable shameful slight that justified drastic action in order to restore honor.

Yup. . .and the girl was not drunk or drinking, as she was the designated driver.

I live in Flower Mound and go to Denton several times a week. Locals are enraged over this murder and the non-scientific consensus is exactly as you said: the dint-dew-nuffins were hitting on the girls, they rejected them and that set off the dint-dew-nuffins.

“If they get him back...”

Well, that part will happen. He’s only in Arizona, not a foreign land. He can fight being extradited but he’ll lose.

At least insofar as I know. I’ve never heard of one state not transferring a prisoner to another, not unless they are accused of committing a crime in the first state, which isn’t the case here.

He’s just an aspiring rapper who was on the cusp of turning his life around.

Not to make light of this story, because it’s tragic and infuriating, but “muh diks”.

Oh man! I almost pee’d myself.

Sounds to me like a typical black gang initiation killing, whether or not the killer was a “marine.”

Imagine the street creds of shooting a white girl. But really, I was shocked to hear this ass clown was a marine. Reminded me of the mixed race couple killed by fellow marines of the husband, they hated the couple because she was black and married to a white man. Bizzaro world.

A decade ago when I retired as an Army civilian it seemed to me that every fourth or fifth soldier I would see at Hood or Bragg looked like the guy. Whatever color there were far too many problematic types around. The result of the interminable campaigns in SW Asia and the multiple tour treadmill. Jamal Johnson could be the poster boy for these disturbing people. He is certainly the type who would like to be ordered to fire on mostly white Americas and commit a wide range of abuses towards ‘rebellious’ civilians.
