Delivering on its promise to deliver "common sense" gun control, the Obama administration on Monday finalized a rule that enables health care providers to report the names of mentally ill patients to an FBI firearms background check system.
The action was one of a series of steps that President Barack Obama had called for in January 2013 in the wake of the Newtown, Conn., shootings to curb gun violence, but the rule was not published until today.
While the 1993 Brady law prohibits gun ownership by individuals who have been involuntarily committed, found incompetent to stand trial or otherwise deemed by a court to be a danger to themselves or others, federal health care privacy rules prohibited doctors and other providers from sharing information without the consent of their patients.
Under the rule, which takes effect next month, for the first time health providers can disclose the information to the background check system without legal repercussions.

If you can’t have a gun because you went for help getting over a death, or counseling to try and save your marriage, we will have to completely shut down all psychological help. People who need help won’t be able to get it. This needs to be struck down ASAP,
Now we know that doctors will report anyone that has a gun and is a Republican to the Feds..when Obama talks about mentally ill people and guns what he means is that he wants to disarm anyone that is a Republican that is what he means..because leftists consider us all to be mentally ill anyway since we don’t support their sick ideology
I thought everyone knew to have two doctors. One you pay cash, give a fake birthdate and alternative name to. And with whom you are honest.
And one you give a real name, pay with insurance and lie to.
Awesome! I’ll remember that. Last year I had to go to the ER. The clerk asked me if I owned a gun. I’m thinking “I feel dizzy, I’m having diarrhea, I’m nausea. What the hell does owning a gun have to do with my symptoms?”. I told him NO. The clerk even apologize for asking but he said he had to.
Just a caution for health care providers; you may end up getting sued for everything you own if you do this. This rule won’t stand up in court.
The government can bray on and on about “common sense,” but until the government begins to display even the slightest bit of “common sense,” I’m not going to give an inch!

Soldiers coming back from the Middle East with Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) will be unable to own a weapon and if they have weapons, will be force-ably robbed of their weapons by government jack-booters. These are American citizens who fought to keep America’s freedoms alive on this planet.
Disarming trained soldiers is how I look at it.
It states “other lawful authority to be a danger to themselves or others or to lack the mental capacity to contract or manage their own affairs, as a result of marked subnormal intelligence or mental illness, incompetency, condition, or disease”

Pharmaceuticals are used to control conditions and diseases ...just how many people will be deprived ipso facto just because of the prescriptions they are taking?

What percentage of the population is on psychiatric medication nowadays? I’m guessing it’s upwards of 30%. If they start reporting all of them, this is disenfranchisement on a wholesale scale.
Not really necessary. Mental illness already includes depression or chronic anxiety, and they hand out those diagnoses (and the accompanying prescriptions) like candy nowadays.
