In 2014, just 14 percent of children under the age of 18 were living with parents in their first marriage with a father who worked and a stay-at-home mother. In the 1960s 50 percent of children lived in that family environment, declining to 26 percent in 1980 and continuing to decline until the 1990s when Pew reports the level began to remain more steady.

I’ve been saying for years here that not only is the US (”American”) birthrate in the toilet, but the few whites I know that breed are doing so for the same reason as welfare gibsmedats. A lot of my children’s friends are from broken homes; it has become so “normal” that now we have a Christmas/holiday comedy coming to theaters celebrating it (something with a father & stepfather).
Agree. Didn’t realize how lucky I was to grow up in that environment. Sad that I couldn’t recreate that for my own.

Funny to read this and realize just how much has been lost.
A Bible verse though comes to mind,
something along the lines of children being set against their parents, and reading this article this morning makes me realize that verse was likely trying to describe the broken family structure we see today. Matthew 10:21
Oh how easy that will be for family members to be set against each other now.
The “great society” at work!
I was a child of this environment, and thankful to have it for my family including my 12 year old son. My main concern now is his future family - that is why he is homeschooled.
The question is, how much are we willing to do to try to turn it around.....

The best way to ensure that is to actively support a candidate as the next President.

Why am I working?
Cuz kids are really really expensive.
I wonder what the percentage is if they add working moms back in.
One of my best friends works 10 hours or so a week and most work is donefrom home. This is structured so that she keeps her skills up to date but is still able to be at home with the kids before and after school and available if they’re sick, etc.. I wonder where she falls in the spectrum....
I grew up in a very typical Italian decent family in the 40s and 50s. Everything revolved around family especially dinner and weekend activities. We did not take separate vacations either.
When I had my own families, both headed by divorced mothers, I insisted we have joint dinners, NO EXCEPTIONS. It worked quite well in that there were discussion of the days activities/school and we had a chance to monitor any behaviors that perhaps were going astray.
Though neither mother was of Italian decent, both had been raised in a similar environment but were not continuing with it before we got together. Yet, both noted it was a positive affect on home and family life. Were I raising a family today, I would do the same again.
This should not be confused with being a helicopter parent.

Stay-at-home mothers are almost an extinct species. The shift towards working mothers was amplified to an extreme under Carter’s economy because dear ole dad, if he was lucky enough to still have a job, couldn’t afford the basics with runaway inflation and loan shark interest rates.
Combined with the women’s rights movement of the 70’s the traditional American family was no more. Lots of other reasons contributed to the destruction of the Leave It To Beaver type family but the Democrats killed it.
Back then, kids stayed out until the street lights came on and no one was too worried what they were up to. They got to be kids. There was a mom a child could run to at every house on the street — anyone’s mom — if the kids needed something and there was the watchful eye of a mom — anyone’s mom — at every house on the street protecting the kids and having direct phone access to every other mom.
The mothers went to work and the kids, left alone, became the real life embodiment of Lord of the Flies as we see today.
My mother did real estate and tax work while my brother and I were in junior high and high school. It was very part-time, except during a couple of months of income tax prep.
I guess that would make us NOT part of the “traditional family” count 40 years ago.
I guess we’d have to find out how authors of this study defined “stay at home mom”
This notion that working mom = broken home -is more than a little silly.
As a child of the 50s and 60s, it breaks my heart to see what this nation has become.
The “good old days” are truly gone forever.
I have two young children and my wife stays home. It’s a lot of sacrifice but I feel it’s worth every bit. It’s actually inspired me to work harder than I ever have and I’ve made much progress in my career as a result. Also, it allows the man to EARN his rightful place as the head of the household. Something rarely seen today.
We’re the 14%.
Difficult? Sure
Worthwhile? Absolutely.
Never a new car, small house, limited toys. Great family
