Very sad indeed. I’m sure the mother is devastated...and will be for life.

Tragic.
Every family should have some sort of code phrase for 'everything is okay'--but "Hi Mom, I'm home!" would be a good one, too.

If someone broke into my house and I shot them, I better be clear who I am shooting and that there was an imminent threat requiring that I shoot them. While accidents happen, there is no room for them when the results involve someone dying. Shooting someone without clarity about your target and appropriate threat making this necessary is wrong. She should be charged with murder.

When dad was an NYPD cop, a fellow cop accidentally shot his wife as she arrived home late at night. I always wondered if that one was really an accident.

St. Cloud police officials said they aren't releasing the names of the mother or daughter since a person in their household is in law enforcement and Florida law permits the withholding of identities in such cases. Reading between the lines would indicate that mom is probably a cop.

Thank you. If a stranger enters your house, and you are aware of his presence and armed, and he is not aware that you are awake and armed, you have an advantage.
There could be extenuating circumstances - maybe the daughter did not live in the area and her arrival was an unexpected surprise, maybe the woman was being stalked, maybe there had been recent break ins, etc.
But "shoot first, ask questions later" and "shoot, shovel and shut up" are bad pieces of advice from idiots and have clearly both backfired this week.
To: Jed Eckert
Did the daughter live there? Was she expected in any way?
So little info to go on.

Why does FL law permit that—the withholding of names when a household member is in law enforcement?
To: Oberon
Either that, or a “domestic partner”.

Why does FL law permit that-the withholding of names when a household member is in law enforcement?Good question. I wasn't aware there was even such a law until now.

The very fact that someone broke into your home is by definition of the castle doctrine an imminent threat.

Many are undercover. Mostly, to protect the families of LEO’s from being targeted by perps, bad ass perps!
