Donald Trump’s Strongest Supporters: A Certain Kind of Democrat (Nationwide Map of Trump Support)
NY Times ^

Posted on 12/31/2015 1:47:01 AM PST by springwater13

Donald Trump holds a dominant position in national polls in no small part because he is extremely strong among people on the periphery of the Republican coalition.

He is strongest among Republicans who are less affluent, less educated and less likely to turn out to vote. His very best voters are self-identified Republicans who nonetheless are registered as Democrats. It's a coalition that's concentrated in the South, Appalachia and the industrial North, according to data provided to The Upshot by Civis Analytics, a Democratic data firm.

Mr. Trump's huge advantage among these groups poses a challenge for his campaign, because it may not have the turnout operation necessary to mobilize irregular voters.

Mr. Trump appears to hold his greatest strength among people like these - registered Democrats who identify as Republican leaners - with 43 percent of their support, according to the Civis data. Similarly, many of Mr. Trump’s best states are those with a long tradition of Democrats who vote Republican in presidential elections, like West Virginia.

Mr. Trump's strength among traditionally Democratic voters could pose some problems for his campaign. Many states bar voters registered with the other party from participating in partisan primaries. Other states go further, not allowing unaffiliated voters to vote in a primary; in the G.O.P. race, for example, that would mean restricting the electorate to those registered as Republicans - one of Mr. Trump’s weakest groups. This group of states includes many favorable to Mr. Trump, like Florida, Pennsylvania and New York.

It is racist to prosecute Bill Cosby for sexual misconduct and not Bill Clinton.

If true, this also means that Trump would do better than most other Republicans in the general election. These “Reagan Democrats” would turn out and vote for Trump in a general election, they probably wouldn’t vote at all if their only alternative to Hillary were someone like Rubio or Jeb.

I’m surprised they didn’t try to bring it back, if they did, they failed.

Am I still disappointed Trump decided to play spoiler, which pushed three good governors - and I prefer conservative governors as presidential candidates - out of the race? Yeah, I am.

At this point, I am leaning towards Cruz, if my primary is even relevant.

There are no perfect candidates in the race, and a couple of the others might not be optimum, but would suffice to undo the damage of 0bama, and ensure that we do not lose the Supreme Court - which is the big issue nobody is talking about in this race, and why the “cut your nose to spite your face” Trump or nobody option that some Trumpbots advocate is such a stupid idea - and why Trump as the candidate is so dangerous.

The idea that there is no difference between Pelosi and Ryan is so stupid that it does not warrant a response.

I guess you and I have a difference in opinion what a conservative is. I worked Walker’s governor and county executive campaigns. He started out really great. Excellent county executive but he changed after the recall. I don’t know if the power went to his head or what. I seriously don’t think he will make it again and that is unfortunate for the state of Wisconsin. Same with Johnson. He was going to go to Washington and fight, instead, he has been on the wrong side of every bill. His political career is over as he will never survive re-election against Russ Feingold. I am fed up with politicians who say one thing and do another. And with Trump, people either love him or hate him. He talks a good game, but I honestly can’t say what he would do as president. He has no track record to compare his words and actions.

I do know if not for Trump, Jeb would be the nominee. And I think we can all agree that would not be good for our country.
