Official: California snowpack at 136 percent of normal

ECHO SUMMIT, Calif. -- The water content of the Sierra Nevada snowpack in drought-stricken California was 136 percent of normal Wednesday when officials took the winter's first manual survey -- an encouraging result after nearly no snow was found at the site in April.

The latest snow level is a good sign, "but that's it -- it's a start," said Frank Gehrke, chief of the California Cooperative Snow Surveys Program for the Department of Water Resources.

After four years of drought, Gehrke plunged a measuring pole into a thick field of snow in the Central Sierra, which includes Lake Tahoe. His survey followed an electronic measurement last week that put the water content of the snowpack at 112 percent of normal. Even more snow has fallen since then.

The snowpack provides about 30 percent of California's water supply during the months when it melts and rushes through rivers and streams to fill reservoirs that remain critically low.

Last Jan. 1, the snowpack was a meager 45 percent of the historical average. On April 1, it had dropped to a record low of 5 percent.

It will NEVER be enough for the weather people. They will whine and moan about SOMETHING wrong. If California has ONE drop of water too much, they drag out the FLOOD tapes. If California has ONE drop of water too little, they drag out the DROUGHT tapes.

They are SO annoying. They whine that California hasn't had any rain in so long. If they KNEW their business they would know that California has TWO seasons:
1. dry from mid-April to mid-October
2. wet from mid-October to mid-April

You NEVER hear of Oakland, San Francisco, Los Angeles or San Diego having rained-out baseball games. You never will.
WET and DRY. Nothing else.

The weather morons keep trying to make California like Maine or Alabama. WON'T HAPPEN.
And, WHY and WHEN did "weather" become such a hot topic and a subject of ENDLESS, stupid, babble?

.

.

Snarl.

yeah, we only need what, four or five years of 150 t0 250 percent to get to even. But we will gladly take all we can get. And I say that even though I had a house flooded out in 95’

That was quick. Expect a while lot more. The Arctic Ice extent is currently off the charts and El Nino is kicking moisture up into that cold air.

BTW - Mexico just had its worse snow storm in over 50 years. The ice man cometh for thee.

Not to worry. The California state government and its residents will find a way to mismanage, misappropriate, and waste a good portion of any gains made this winter.

Oops. Expect a whole lot more. Roswell New Mexico just set its all time snow record. And it was set in December, not February.

the alarmist community has got this covered...

first, its "only" 136% ..."only"...

and then it'll be: with all this moisture the undergrowth will grow immensely and then when it dries in late summer there will be tremendous fire danger...

if you really try, you can make any good news bad news....

The aquifers in the San Joaguin have been depleted over the past four years. Farmers could not access much of the snow melt because of bait fish in the creeks being protected. They drilled and pumped.

The weather here runs in multi-year patterns. We need to store when it is wet to survive the dry years, but new reservoirs are fought against.

Basically, the government is anti population growth and is subservient to union leaders who are not exactly visionary.

Clearly a false account. By 2014 we will need to use old movies to show children what snow looked like. Warmiot experts told us so.

I’m 46 and have lived from San Diego to Santa Rosa (and a few other states in between), native angeleno - I don’t ever remember hearing “the drought is over”. I remember in the 90’s reached 75 or 80% of goal, but seems like we are in perpetual drought.

Is it 136 percent of the old normal, or the new normal?
