Alarm Spreads in Brazil Over a Virus and a Surge in Malformed Infants
The New York Times ^ | Ded. 30, 2015 | Simon Romero

SAO PAULO, Brazil - A little-known virus spread by mosquitoes is causing one of the most alarming health crises to hit Brazil in decades, officials here warn: thousands of cases of brain damage, in which babies are born with unusually small heads.

...The alarm stems from a huge surge in babies with microcephaly, a rare, incurable condition in which their heads are abnormally small. Brazilian officials have registered at least 2,782 cases this year, compared with just 147 in 2014 and 167 the year before.

...No one knows precisely when the Zika virus made the leap to Brazil from its place of origin in Africa. Some researchers say it could have arrived during the 2014 World Cup, when Brazil welcomed travelers from around the globe. Others think the virus may have come during a canoe race weeks later, when paddlers from French Polynesia, the site of a recent Zika outbreak, arrived in Rio de Janeiro.

Researchers, alert to the rapid increase in cases, say that Zika's spread to Brazil reflects how easily viruses are jumping from one part of the planet to another.

They are particularly worried that the disease is wreaking havoc in a region where the population has not encountered it before, and that climate change may be allowing viruses like Zika to thrive in new domains.

But other virologists caution that more testing is needed to prove the dangerous link between the virus and brain damage, leaving the full extent of the threat to the country, and the hemisphere, unclear.

Might be travelers, imports, or immigrants carrying the disease. Or it could be CLIMATE CHANGE.

Tragic effects, whatever is causing it. A fifteen-fold increase in microcephaly.

It's not just Brazil. According to the CDC, Zika Virus is in Mexico. The primary vector is the yellow fever mosquito (Aedes aegypti), which is also found in states bordering the Gulf of Mexico. Worse, Zika can be transmitted by the Asian Tiger mosquito (Aedes albopictus), which is not endemic in the Eastern United States. Unless, we do something soon, this virus will soon hit the US.

In one sentence I can connect it to global air travel and illegal imigrants bringing it with them.

We used to turn back diseased people. No apologies or hand wringing about it either.

Those days need to return. Big time.

The third world has been banging for bucks for so long that pinching off new ones has become a means of survival.

Time to snip that crap in the gonads.

You can’t just turn back the sick people. You’d have to to draw blood from all the asymptomatic people and test it for dozens or hundreds of diseases, viral, bacterial, and parasitic.

Some diseases won’t be revealed by blood testing. TB, for instance. You have to test the person for an immune reaction which takes a few days. I hope any traveler from a place where TB is endemic is required to be tested before getting a visa, and the testing is not corrupt.

And then there are all the people without visas crossing our unenforced border.

I agree. If we were serious about disease control we would do this. But the “leaders” are not.
