The apartments in a new Manhattan building boast little balconies, tall ceilings, dishwashers and storage space. All in 360 square feet or less. It's micro-living in the nation's biggest city, and New Yorkers could be seeing more of it. Planning officials are proposing to end a limit on how small apartments can be, opening the door for more "micro-apartments" that advocates see as affordable adaptations to a growing population of single people. Critics fear a turn back toward the city's tenement past and question whether less space will really mean less expensive.

I just read Ghost Maps about the London cholera epidemic of 1854. The author says humans are destined to live in high density cities because of the high cost of delivering services to rural areas. Plus he thinks people like to live around others because they are social animals.
I used to hate cities but I now work in one, and I like the city during the day. I wouldn*t want to live here, though, even in a nice high-rise. I like going home to the quiet and wildlife.
When you are younger that social scene is preferable, but at my age I prefer the quiet and slower pace of the country. The key is to be close enough to a big city so that you can go there when you want.
Sounds like IKEA will do a booming business...
OTOH, he also says the population growth curve has leveled off and we can anticipate a real population decline in the future.
I live in a small 2-bedroom brick cape, built 1951 on enough property to have privacy. The floor design is great, no wasted space. If you don’t overload a house like this with furniture and stuff, it’s plenty of space. And guess what? It’s incredibly fuel efficient, compared to newer houses.
Worst.
Plan.
EVER.
In the coming days of hardship, being packed on a small island with at least 4 million people -- and being forbidden to own guns -- does not seem like a prudent move.
I would never live within 100 miles of NYC.
An eye opener and a dream of the commies here in America. Get the masses in the cities where control of them is easily done. Agenda 21.
An “opportunity” to be surrounded by libtards in a godless city that will turn into an absolute hellhole when the SHTF.

“The author says humans are destined to live in high density cities because of the high cost of delivering services to rural areas.”
That statement caught my eye. I work in land development, and those who oppose new developments often cite the cost of ‘delivering services’. And by this, they mean government services such as fire and police coverage.
But since this article is about Manhattan, lets look at the cost of ‘delivering services’. Not much is grown, bottled, packaged, or manufactured on Manhattan - so just about everything you can think of costs more, because it has to get delivered to the island. Those who worship high density tend to forget that the products of our everyday lives have to be ‘made’ somewhere. So there is a limit to how many of us live in dense cities...and I imagine we peaked in the US in the 1950s and will never hit that peak again.
And a fair number of folks build out apartments over their garages. Put in a 6x6 bathroom (stand up shower only) 8x8 kitchen area, and that leaves a bit less than 12x12 for sleeping and sitting. (You will probably need at least one closet.) Use dual purpose furniture (futon or sofa bed/ table/desk bedside table/side table. Or go dorm style with the sofa under the loft bed for even more usable space (they did mention high ceilings.)
Give me enough land where I don’t have to see or hear the neighbors.
I’ve lived in those little WWII one bedroom with the carport turned into a second bedroom. It was fine when I was single and newly married. Not so fine later on.
Those NYC micro apartments with high ceilings sort of defeat the purpose. With high ceilings, every two floors loses the potential of a third floor.
Rent-a-jail-cell.
My wife and I joke about putting a tiny house out in the yard, just so I can “get away” every now and then to watch ballgames, smoke cigars, and scratch myself.
