The argument has been made that Dred Scott was actually a brilliant move against slavery, in that by not counting slaves as full people, it prevented the slave holding states from becoming wildly over-represented in Congress and firming up their ability to maintain the institution levislatively.
Now that they ARE full people; and we subsidize having more and more of them; guess what's going to happen...
