I had never even heard or seen the word. I think it was an intentional usage
It is a regional thing. I read an article where the author received some emails from men in their 60s and 70s from New York’s outer boroughs and from neighboring Long Island, who said they used the word when they were younger to refer to sports teams getting beaten badly. Even the fellow who used it on NPR was from NYC and around Trump’s age. So it’s regional and generational.
