Half of Illinois grads entering community college need remedial instruction
Lincoln Courier ^ | Dec. 20, 2015

New data shows about half of Illinois high school graduates going on to the state's community colleges need remediation in at least one subject.

That data was released this past week by the Illinois State Board of Education. It shows 48.7 percent of graduates who enrolled in the community college system needed remedial instruction to prepare them for entry-level college coursework.

...

For the first time, that information is being reported with Illinois Report Card data.

If only the public teachers unions had even more insane pensions - we could fix this.

Quick — let’s raise taxes and double the education budget. That’ll solve it.

This is nothing new; it was the case when I was teaching com/col 20-30 years ago. Most of the 18yo’s who were going to my com/col were there because it was free to them, they didn’t know what else to do, and it kept them on their daddy’s insurance, and/or on welfare. The older students did the work, and the high schoolers who wanted college-level courses did the work; the majority of the “traditional” students thought of com/col as high school without the public school restrictions, and acted accordingly.

Many years ago, a college counselor at my high school made a comment that “not everybody should go to college”.

Boy did he get an earful.

Only half and only one state? They do not teach anything any more and it they do the “students” refuse to learn.

Looks like Illinois needs an Act 10 like Wisconsin.

The number one high school in Arlington, VA....a nationally recognized high school....was told in a nice way by some of it’s graduates that kids were being rejected for first year college classes because they simply weren’t capable of handling the work....so this meant remedial type classes and time wasted. A work associate of mine had both his sons in the school and his wife was arranging for some tutor during the last year of school for each kid.....who was to bring them ‘up to standards’. I sat there shaking my head....this guy was paying $2,500 for each kid, per each year....just to ensure no remedial classes were tasked on them.

Blame it on the public school system.

Don’t complain, their lack of college readiness brings in more tuition.

Yep-even the world’s best teacher can’t make kids care enough to truly learn. I’m not defending the government school system by any means. Culturally, kids place far more importance on being entertained than learning.

I’m an adjunct instructor at the local college and I’ve noticed that more than half of the kids entering need remedial Math, Science, and English prior to starting Freshman level classes. Some kids can’t even do basic math problems or diagram a sentence. They tend to migrate toward classes that don’t require math, like women’s studies and art.

My guess is that 90% believe in white privilege, global warming, and income redistribution. Damned teacher unions in government schools.

Obviously racism and not enough spending at K-12.

But you gotta hand it to the students. Just last week there was some stupid girl lamenting that she is in $100,000 in debt as she has been wasting her time at a $43,000 per year college. The students at the CC can get up to speed for a few hundred bucks.
