PASCAGOULA, Miss. (Dec. 15, 2015)âHuntington Ingalls Industriesâ (NYSE:HII) Ingalls Shipbuilding division launched Ralph Johnson (DDG 114), the companyâs 30th Arleigh Burke-class (DDG 51) guided missile destroyer, on Saturday. (Super cool time lapse video of the launch.)
âThe last week of translating this quality ship across land and then launching it from our drydock is no small task, and our shipbuilders accomplished it in a very efficient manner,â said George Nungesser, Ingallsâ DDG 51 program manager. âAll crafts and personnel making up this DDG shipbuilding crew have performed very well, and we were able to launch DDG 114 ahead of schedule. Itâs a nice milestone to accomplish as we end the year.â

It is amazing how the get the hull from dry land into the water. At the NASSCO ship yard in San Diego they still use the “sliding weigh” but the ship does not go into the water sideways. They use tide, coffer dams, hooks, and gravity. They launch during full moons. The ancient Phoenicians invented the technique. I watched a 67,000 ton 800 foot long military sea lift ship launched. What a sight.
Sure glad someone remembered to put the bilge plugs in!
