The second race to the moon goes into high gear

The second race to the moon went into high gear when the Google Lunar X Prize officially certified that Moon Express has contracted with a company called Rocket Lab to launch its lunar lander on board an Electron rocket sometime in late 2017 to land on the moon. Moon Express is the second team competing for the $30 million prize to land on the moon to have acquired a certified launch contract. SpaceIL, an Israeli team, has already acquired a contract to launch their lander on board the SpaceX Falcon 9.

1) Send rover to the moon with 3D camera.

2) Record 2 hours of 4K 3D footage.

3) Put in theaters.

4) Make a billion.

5) Now sell the ability to control the rover in real-time for 10,000 dollars a pop, and rake in even more cash.

Clyde Lewis (Ground Zero radio show) had a guest recently saying we did go to the moon, but the TV feed was fake, produced on earth by Stanley Kubrick.

I don’t buy it (but what do I know?), but it was an entertaining show, including the calls.

Landing on the moon isn’t the hard part.

So is goooogle going to claim the moon as their own so they can build their next server farm on it?

“Now sell the ability to control the rover in real-time”

There is a 1.25 second delay for transmissions to reach the moon (and for transmissions from the moon to reach the earth), so it could never be quite “real-time”. You would enter a command, the rover would respond 1.25 seconds later, and then you would see the result 2.5 seconds later...

That’s closer to real time than NBC “like live” Olympic coverage.

That guy was an idiot. That theory is based on a fake documentary that was made to SPOOF conspiracy theorists!

The conspiracy theorists cut bits out of the documentary that was lampooning them, posted them on youtube out of context, and people actually started believing it. It’s stupefying how gullible some people are.

Here’s info on the fake documentary:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dark_Side_of_the_Moon_%28film%29

Just go to youtube and search “Kubrick Moon hoax” and you’ll see all the conspiracy videos put up by people who chopped up that fake documentary.

I hear ya.

It was a lot more entertaining than Richard Hoagland or Major Ed Dames though.

Perhaps, but when it comes to a control system, it’s a formidable hurdle. Watching something on a delay is no problem, but when you are controlling something, you need to respond to feedback, so any delay is problematic.

Just try playing any real time online simulator or game while you are running a file sharing app to induce lag on your internet connection. You’ll give it up after a minute, I guarantee :)

The general solution for that is making the rover slow, and having it move in kind of a “turn based” method (push the stick and it goes 5 feet and stops waiting for the next command). Which might make it kind of boring, except you’re controlling something on the freaking moon. Really all of these problems have been solved, they’d just need to build in some extra cushion for it being driven by untrained people.

The R on the sleeve is rather incongruous with the N4554 on the front.
