I walked to school when I was in 1st grade. We lived in Tucson AZ, a relatively small town in 1957.

I walked to school in kindergarten. So did every other kid as far as I can remember. And in every other grade, too.

She must be white. What about the crackhead mothers whose kids eat three meals a day at school? What do they get —bigger checks?

This did not occur in a vacuum.
A Wallingford woman has been arrested after police found her 8-year-old stepson walking to school by himself. The elementary school student missed his school bus and decided to walk about two miles to school. A business owner on North Plains Industrial Road saw the child walking by himself and called police.
When they went to the childâs house, they found his step mother, 38-year-old Maria Hasankolli, sleeping.
"She had to be awakened and the officer asked her where the child was. She said he's downstairs and they went downstairs and she couldn't find him and said he's not there,â said Wallingford Police Lt. Cheryl Bradley.
Hasankolli was arrested for risk of injury to a minor.
The boy lives on North Plains Highway, and his step-brother said he was home with the child left the house that morning and told Eyewitness News that nobody knew the child missed the bus.
"Sheâs a wonderful mother. The cops could have handled it better, (the cop) wasn't the friendliest from the start,â said Mackeon Dudley.
Police said they have been to the house before. Two years ago she was investigated by the Department of Children and Families, where a child in the home said she âtaped him to the floor and also put tape over his mouth.â
Hasankolli has an âextensive history with DCF,â records said, and âDudley is a convicted felon and has numerous arrests for assault and violation of probation."
DCF did not comment on whether they are still investigating any prior incidents.

I like to tell people who ask where I grew up that I was from Krypton, and that my home blew up a long time ago.
This story is about the town I grew up in. I delivered papers when I was 10 years old. I walked or rode a bike every day to Moses Y. Beach, from a distance close to a mile. No bus service that close. Bus service was for the kids on Circle Drive.
I will admit that the kid was walking in a curvy Industrial Park with no sidewalks and a 45 MPH speed limit and not much in the way of stop signals. If he was going to Moses Y. Beach, he would have had to cross Route 5/N Colony during rush hour. If he was going to Yalesville school, Route 68 would be worse.

So the punishment for leaving a kid alone for a few hours is leaving the kid motherless for 10 years? They probably will assign the kid to a couple of fags to take care of him.

We lived on a farm in Kansas and if kids wanted to get anywhere they walked or rode a horse, which I was allowed to do when the snow got deep. It was 2 miles one way - and no it wasn’t uphill both ways! Scariest thing between my house and school was Jackard’s bull which would often get loose. Used to tiptoe when walking by their fence so he wouldn’t hear me.

Hmm, just tested it on my desktop browser (normally use mobile) with both Adblock Plus and ublock, and it still popped up. Ublock has usually been more reliable for me in blocking these stupid modals.

I rode my bicycle to school when I was 8 years old, I returned home quite often in the afternoon to find nobody home.
I remember making peanut butter and toast, and chocolate milk and watching the Flinstones and Superman on tv.
This is ridiculous

Actually, I haven’t put Ghostery onto this account, yet. Not sure why.... Obvious oversight. Thanks.

My daughter walked to school at this age, just under a mile. She was a patrol crossing guard by age 9. Yet, it was not legal for a child this age to be home alone. Virginia, late 1970s.

Yes everyone walked to school in 1840 when you went to school. They did even on Little House on the Prairie. However those days are over. My wife and I LITERALLY can see the bus stop our daughter goes to but we still either walk her or drive her to the stop and stay and ensure she gets on the bus. Most times we actually just drive her to school but sometimes she begs us to allow her to go on the bus. As far as walking, heck no. We have had too many kidnappings to allow for this today. People are nutz. Look at all the kids being released from their captures after turning 18. It is an epidemic when you hear all the stories of kids being kept in a house for 12 or more years.

And I walked to school everyday from kindergarten in 1955 till I bought a car during my high school years in 1966.
