It came down to the addition of a single word for the a tree lighting ceremony, but that word carried enough significance for borough Councilwoman Charlene Storey to resign.
Minutes after the council voted 4-2 Thursday night to change the name of the ceremony from A Tree Lighting to A Christmas Tree Lighting, the councilwoman-at-large, left the meeting. She later submitted her letter of resignation with the municipal clerk's office.
"I cannot in good conscience continue to be part of a council that is exclusionary or to work with a Mayor who is such," Storey said in her letter.
When reached today, Storey said she regretted having to resign, but said the change "cuts non-Christians out of the loop and favors one religion."
Storey, who was raised Catholic but is now a "non-believer" and has never hidden that fact, said the issue is a matter of principle.
Changing the ceremony, she said, "turned it from a non-religious event to a religious one."

If it’s not a Christmas tree, what the hell is it? IT’S A CHRISTMAS TREE. Does it affect your life in any way? Is your life any worse because there is a beautiful tree with lights on it? I am Jewish. I love Christmas because of the smells and the music and because it seems everyone is so much nicer to each other. Who on Earth would not like that? Does it diminish me as a Jew? NO. So freaking stupid.
It’s like some folks who become vegetarian. “If I can’t have meat or chose not to eat it, no body else will have it either”. I guess she ‘gets allergic’ to anything smacking of religious influence. The Mayor should explain that Christmas has become a cultural observance in America. Not all people who observe it are Christian or devout ones.

Ordinarily you would say she must be a Democrat and you’d probably be right; but today you’d have to say she is almost certainly a Democrat since that Party has thrown off its mask and shown us all who they really are which is a bunch of religion haters. The woman had consternation for the elucidation that a celebration might be a good place for a christian congregation regardless of denomination that caused a change in her work location and sent her to a new destination for remuneration.
