Up is down ...
Thats the point being made: the ship has computer-controlled stabilization that will be used to manage and counteract the inherent instability of the hull.
The first flying wing bombers (XB-35, YB-49) were incredibly unstable. The B-2 has exactly the same stability issues, but uses computers to stay under control.
The flared bow used on the Burkes helps recovery in heavy seas. The downside is that it subjects the hull to serious stresses via “slamming” and several Burkes have had issues with hull and superstructure cracks.
The last two Nimitzes, Reagan and Bush, as well as the Ford class have bulbous extensions built into their bows.
Are you sure about the Nimitz having a sonar dome? IIRC AMERICA was the only modern sonar domed carrier. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kitty_Hawk-class_aircraft_carrier I knew we had Sonar you could hear it when we were at sea. I slept at waterline level. The Dome never effected our ability at sea. But it was removed IIRC in the 1980 overhaul because that was a drydocked overhaul. I know I’m using a WIKI source but I also remember reading a former AMERICA Sonar Techs post on the ships website a few years back saying he was involved in the removal.
The shape of that navy ship is triggering me into remembering a confederate ship from the Civil War. I don’t feel safe. Makes me think the US gov is going to go allow slavery again. I don’t think I can go to work tomorrow.
WIKI’s info is a little off as well. She had two anchors on the bow. One was center and the other one that was a smaller about half - three quarter the size of the center one on the Starboard side of the Bow. I don’t remember us ever using both though. I think the center one was always used. I also do not remember an aft anchor. LOL. I wish my Bosun Mate buddy was still alive he’d probably know the story on that one.
