WINNIPEG — The Edmonton Eskimos have won their first CFL championship title since 2005 by beating the Ottawa RedBlacks 26-20 in the 103rd Grey Cup presented by Shaw.

Edmonton took a six-point lead with less than four minutes left in the game as Jordan Lynch broke into the endzone with a one-yard quarterback sneak. The Eskimos added a two-point convert following the touchdown.

The RedBlacks sat in front 19-18 following three quarters of play thanks to a 33-yard Chris Milo field goal.

The RedBlacks? Boy, that should piss off both the Native and black Americans.

Redblacks? Those are the brothers who belong to RevCom, right?

Gotta hand it to the Canucks, we are about to illegalize Redskins, and they use both RED and BLACK.

I had to look them up as I did not recognize the name. This is a relatively new franchise. So the name is no doubt PC (being Canada).

Now,on the other hand, after 60 years in the CFL, the Inuit are suddenly unhappy with the Eskimos name.

And the team that played the RedBlacks were the Eskimos. Two teams named after indigenous peoples who still live in Canada and its territories. As far as I know the Canadian people haven’t protested and demanded the names be changed.

I am offended by those names. I need professional counseling.

Sorry, a blogger friend in Toronto tells me that RedBlack has nothing to do with a description of native peoples in Canada. It’s a name that pays tribute to the men and women who serve Canada. He says it refers to the military and police officers. Wow, that’s even worse to an American lefty. Naming a sports team to honor the military and the police!!!

Well, as the team Mascot is “Big Joe,” who is a Lunber Jack wearing Red and Black plaid, and the helmets have a saw blade on the side of them, I would say that a Red-Black is a logger. That is also the impression of the Ottawa papers (I’m about two hours outside of the city). Loggers aren’t terribly politically correct either.

The original Ottawa CFL franchise, the Ottawa Rough Riders, folded in 1996, after 120 years in existence, using red, black and white as their colours since 1898. .

CFL football returned in 2001 with the Ottawa Renegades, also red, black and white, but they ceased operations in 2006. The RedBlacks are in their second season of operation. The owners of the new franchise wanted to namew them the Rough Riders, but the Saskatchewan franchise, named the Roughriders, founded in 1910, would not allow the Ottawa franchise to use the old, VERY similar name.

Not sure how the name was arrived at, but it was one of five names submitted in a focus group. The symbol is VERY similar to the Rough Riders old symbol. As Ottawa was a lumber town before it became Canada's capital, you will note the outline looks similar to the blade of a circular saw.

For what it's worth, all Ottawa sports teams generally use red, white and black as their colours. (NHL Senators, Jr A hockey Ottawa 67s.)

I remember when Warren Moon led the Eskimoes to something like 5 or 6 straight Grey Cup titles.

RedBlacks? A double racist name! And contradictory, to boot.

There’s still my favorite CFL team, the Saskatchewan Roughriders. (No space in the name, unlike the former Ottawa Rough Riders)

Canadians have little imagination when it comes to naming sports franchises. Redblacks, indeed. For a time there were even two separate franchises called the Roughriders in a league of only eight teams.

Doug Flutie made in big in the CFL, too. If Tim Tebow is so keen to play football, he should move to Canada. The rights to him in the CFL are held by Montreal. But Tebow doesn’t want to play there.

The melon heads from Saskaberry, are a pale immitation of the original Rough Riders! Unfortunately, the originals were bought by the Gliebermans of Detroit and run into the ground in 1996.

I like Saskatchewan, too. And Calgary and Hamilton.
Sasky went nowhere this season as, pace the Dallas Cowboys, they lost their quarterback and never recovered.
