I’ve done the same thing, a few times (but not for 400!). Sometimes, the waiter/waitress comes back to my table to tell me someone else has beaten me to it.

Good on you for doing that—it is admirable.

If someone has beat you to it, it shows there are more generous and thoughtful people than we think in the world.
