Russia has announced a package of economic sanctions against Turkey over the shooting down of a Russian jet on the Syrian border on Tuesday.

A decree signed by President Vladimir Putin (in Russian) covers imports from Turkey, the work of Turkish companies in Russia and any Turkish nationals working for Russian companies.

The decree also calls for an end to charter flights between the countries.....

Turkey and Russia have important economic links. Russia is Turkey's second largest trading partner, while more than three million Russian tourists visited Turkey last year.

Mr. Putin's spokesman Dmitry Peskov said on Saturday that there were close to 90,000 Turkish nationals working in Russia.......

The difference in resolve between Putin and our joke in the WH when it comes to negotiation is sickening.

This is what you do before you negotiate final terms, and in the end, Turkey will pay dearly for what they did.

Contrast that with Kerry and Iran. WE should have doubled down on the sanctions before negotiatating with them.

November, 2016 can’t come fast enough.

Didn’t the Russian plane fly into Turkey just like a number of other times? Don’t you think they were asking for it? Got to admit I am no fan of either country right now.

I am pleased to see that the two countries are working out their differences Our focus should remain on ISIS.

I have never liked the idea of a country controlling the flow of people from a country because countries should not be prisons, but I do think that it will be important for pressure to be placed on Turkey to control the flow of ISIS recruits from Turkey to Syria. I am not sure exactly how that can be best done, but it is worth forming a plan. And, clearly, Turkey has every right to control who crosses its borders to enter Turkey. It should be much more difficult for European jihadis to travel back and forth between Europe and Syria/Iraq.

Also, there is reason to believe that some of the oil produced by ISIS is being exported through Turkey. Steps should be taken to stop that and, of course, also to disrupt oil production in ISIS territory to begin with. An important ingredient in the defeat of ISIS is to break it economically.

And, we need toremember that what we are witnessing is a struggle between the two branches of Islam. We cannot expect Sunni states like Saudi Arabia and Turkey to welcome the idea of a Shiite strip between Iran and the Mediterranean, particularly if that strip is controlled by Iran. This is a very complicated problem and the best interests of the USA may not involve trying to pick between these two branches of Islam. There are nuts in both branches and neither branch desires to become more like us. So, none of this is easy as we are seeing.

As long as there is no shooting war, Russia is well within their rights to so the sanction dance, and I could not care less.

Didn’t the Russian plane fly into Turkey just like a number of other times? Don’t you think they were asking for it?

I read somewhere that the narrow strip of land that Turkey claims has been in dispute for near a century. Similar to Russia moving into parts of Ukraine because Russians lived there, Turkey took over that region of Syria because of Turkmen living there. Although on a map it looks like solid Turkey land, Syria still longs to have it back.

That doesn't excuse Russian planes from flying over that strip, but perhaps Syria still likes to think of challenging the Turks about possession from time to time although being in a weak position to do so. Now with Russia helping Syria, Syria might move for negotiations to claim that strip. Similar giveaways have been done when someone has to give reparations for hostilities against a winning alliance.

I think you are right. Both countries blundered here. I suspect that the incursions were intentional, but they were minor and did not warrant taking the lives of these pilots. For me, it is just a reminder of how human and fallible world leaders can be and that we should keep that in mind. They do a lot of stupid things.
