Don't make that assumption, the brown recluse IS rare in New York, but there have been reports of it. My cousin in Florida was bitten by one of those damn things and although the bite is seldom fatal, the resulting necrosis around the bite site is a frightening thing, and requires serious medical attention.

The little bastard is brown (of course) with a dark violin-like mark on it's back. I suggest shaking out your shoes if they've been sitting around, or in a closet. I won't post any pictures but you can do a Google image search and see plenty of them. Be careful!
