The area where the Russian plane was shot down by the Turks is a contested area held by a Turkmen tribe but administered by Syria after the dissouluton of the Ottoman empire.
No way in hell would NATO Ok this Turkish shooting. In fact if NATO knew about that decision there would be some back channel communications to both sides. And never happen. This was a exclusively a Turk high command decision and there was a report here (FRs)that the Turk PM OKd it.
Cruz I believe is calling for a review of Turks belonging in NATO because this is an attempt by them to start a damm war. And Rubio is way way wrong on supporing the Turks. We should be arming the Kurds and giving them their country as well as doing the same with Iran and support the regional factionalism going on in that country.

The Pentagon was likely in on the communications in real time and only had to get a message, “request shootdown” and if it had been predetermined that an incident was desired the reply was instantly,”shoot it down.” Seconds. Erdogan is not a fool. He already knew what was desired and only waited for the opportunity. If this was preplanned then he already had the NATO (read Obama) approval. If this results in massive new military aid to Turkiye then this was surely the case.
