Turkey warns Putin not to 'play with fire'

Turkey's president Tayyip Erdogan on Friday warned Vladimir Putin not to "play with fire" as their war of words continued to escalate over the downing of a jet.

Putin has refused to contact Erdogan because Ankara does not to apologize for the downing of the Russian warplane, Putin aide Yuri Ushakov told Reuters Friday.

On Thursday, Putin again slammed Turkey's explanations for the shoot down near the border with Syria, saying that the warplane's flight details had been passed to the U.S. in advance and should have been known to the Turkish government.

"The American side, which leads the coalition that Turkey belongs to, knew about the location and time of our planes' flights, and we were hit exactly there and at that time," Putin said during a news conference with French President Francois Hollande, during which the two leaders vowed to increase cooperation in the fight against ISIS.

It must be pretty hard, since Turkey violated Greece airspace over two thousand times.

Great, another Russo-Turkish war!

This time with nukes and NATO. What better way of spending the holidays than worrying about this on top of everything else.

Probably a Sunburn missile. HZB did the same to a Israeli gunboat a while back

NATO could kick out Turkey, but would it not be a lot easier for Russia to just quit taunting Turkey by disregarding its borders? How hard would that be?

Believe it or not, Russia has not opened its airspace and I would not suggest that you violate it. Putin just miscalculated and thought that Turkey would not do anything in response. It was just another Putin mistake and a tragedy for the families of these pilots. But life will go on. This is not Putin's first screwup.

Why don't you think Putin sacrificed his pilot to set up further justifications for warfare against Turkey?

You're naive.

It sounds like you think Putin is a nut job. I am confident you are wrong. He just made a mistake. It was not his first one.

Way past time to dismember the parastate of Turkey and return it to its rightful inhabitants: Armenians Greeks and Assyrians. Kurds should have some land too.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but hasn't Turkey violated Syria's airspace numerous times to attack the Kurds?

And isn't Russia an ally of Syria?

So might Russia be setting up those S300’s and 400’s that they just brought in to protect Syria's border?

And now, might not Russia be set to take out any Turkish aircraft that violates Syrian airspace for ANY reason?

And they are both Muslims with grandiose ambitions.

Nah.

I wish we had an American Patriot for a president rather than either of those two turds.

Gürsel Tekin, who is vice president of the Republican People’s Party CHP in Turkey, claims that Bilal ErdoÄŸan is up to his neck in complicity with terrorism, but as long as his father holds office he will be immune from any judicial prosecution.

On social media in Turkey, there are pictures of Bilal ErdoÄŸan in very friendly passiar with renowned ISIS leaders.

Please remember that every Russian Tsar since Peter the Great has dreamt of controlling Constantinople, the Bosphorus and the Dardenells. Erdogan is playing with fire.

Please remember that every Russian Tsar since Peter the Great has dreamt of controlling Constantinople, the Bosphorus and the Dardenells. Erdogan is playing with fire.

When nearly 350 years go by and a plan is not working, it may be time to revise the plan. The last 25 years have not been good years for Russian expansion. Does anyone remember the USSR?

I think Stalin had bigger visions than Peter. They did not work out, either.

People have to be realistic and I think that Putin is probably growing as a leader. Most of them do. I really suspect that he knew what his jets were doing and I really think that he thought it was safe fun to provoke a country like Turkey. But, it did not work out and the miscalculation caused Putin a nosebleed. I am sure that his feelings are hurt but he will get over it.

I hear that he is calling the Russian tourists home from Turkey, but I also hear that Russian tourist traffic has been down anyway because of the decline of the ruble. I do think that Putin could do much to improve the Russian economy. I think that he is mistaken about the virtues of a kleptocracy as compared to a free market economy. If his economy continues to deteriorate, his options and freedom of action will become fewer.

Putin should cooperate with the West and I hear that is his new plan. A future of isolation with Iran and Assad is not much of a future (even if Putin could talk North Korea into joining the alliance). I suspect US-Russian relations to improve. We have a common enemy in ISIS.

That much is true. But on the new FR, only Putin is allowed to have balls. Frankly, I hope he gets a good kick to them for that reason alone. To watch some FReepers cry.

Keep your imagination to yourself, and do try to own your own opinions instead of speaking in the neutral tense to dispense insults. What you call a mistake has actually led, directly, to a destabilization of conditions between Turkey and Russia whereby Russia can claim wounded and betrayed status not only with Turkey, but also the Obama administration and NATO. Putin can exploit that new status to support all sorts of military adventures, and will. If you don't think he'd sacrifice a pilot for that, you're a child.
